Stone bar tops in Stepney Green
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Stepney Green kitchens
The buildings and streets around Stepney Green
Homeowners tend to arrive at stone bar top work in Stepney Green with a picture saved on a phone and no clear sense of what their own kitchen will allow. The Georgian houses put the kitchen in the lower ground or rear ground floor with low ceilings, thick masonry and a run of around 3m broken by a chimney breast. Victorian mansion flats have a small original kitchen with a deep window reveal and a larder recess that people keep and shelve out. The quotation visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It is also the simplest way to find out which you have.
The side return was an outside toilet and a coal store before it was ever a kitchen, and the walls left over from that are half a brick thick. What carries a bar top here is rarely a kitchen carcass, so the framing underneath gets looked at before anything is measured across the top of it. Support under the overhang comes first on the drawing.
A basement is often reached by its own door under the front steps, and that door is smaller than anything else on the route. Original walls give nothing straight to work to, which is why a bar here is built as its own frame and scribed at the back rather than trusted to the plaster behind it. Piece length is capped by the way in and the support follows.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to Georgian merchant house, late-Victorian mansion dwelling and post-war infill block. The one you have sets the piece length before the kitchen does.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Stepney Green is its own job
What we look for on a survey in Stepney Green is the sort of thing that never appears on a kitchen plan. Several of the older houses are listed or in a conservation area, so scaffolding, hoisting and any external route need agreeing in advance. Front steps up to a raised entrance and a narrow original hallway mean a slab has to come in on edge and turn at the stair foot. Old masonry walls bow and the chimney breast is never plumb, so template on the finished plaster and expect deep scribes on both ends of the run. Somebody comes out to Stepney Green, looks at all of it, and puts a number on it before you decide anything.
The work
What bar tops involves
A stone bar top covers the surface and what carries it: the top itself, the edge profile on every face that shows, and the steel or corbels holding the projection up. We measure the frame before we measure the top, because a bar top is set level to itself and the frame is what it will be packed off. You are left with every visible face finished to one standard, the underside of the front edge included, which is the face a seated person looks straight at.
Stone bar tops divide into two kinds of work: a home bar built into a room somebody lives in, and a trade counter that has to survive a service every night. The top is levelled along its own length and packed off the frame, since a floor in an older building will not give a straight line to work from. The back is scribed to whatever the plaster does, and the front is set out from a line of its own. Supported first, polished second, fitted last.

The money
What it costs in Stepney Green
Two counters of the same length price very differently depending on how far the front edge reaches, because past a certain point the carcass stops carrying it and steel starts. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. Multiplying your worktop area by something between £110 and £550 gives you a material bill rather than a job cost, and the two are far enough apart to be worth keeping separate. Frame, support and top, each priced as itself.

The carry, and what it rules out
A balcony lift looks simpler than a window lift and is not, because the balustrade sets the height a piece has to clear before it can be lowered in. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. A trade bar is carried in outside trading hours or not at all.

Stepney Green in the housing figures
In Stepney Green, most homes are rented rather than owned. A bar is a fixture, so who signs off the steel under the nose is settled before the frame is boarded up. Corbels chosen, not simply supplied.

What Stepney Green asks for
Not a domestic job, so it is not ranked against the streets around it. Those streets generate worktop templating, worktop design & quotation and worktop fabrication. Same slabs, same saw, same installers.

Getting stone into a Stepney Green kitchen
Several of the older houses are listed or in a conservation area, so scaffolding, hoisting and any external route need agreeing in advance. Front steps up to a raised entrance and a narrow original hallway mean a slab has to come in on edge and turn at the stair foot.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Stepney Green
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Stepney Green?
Yes. Stepney Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E1. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. What comes off the van first is whatever holds the top up. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.
What should I expect from bar tops in a Stepney Green kitchen?
Georgian houses put the kitchen in a basement or a rear closet wing, and the stairs down to it are the tightest part of the whole route. A bar in one of these houses is either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the two behave differently. A garage floor slopes and the frame takes that up. Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The back of a bar is seen, so the back is finished.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Stepney Green?
The ground below stays closed off for the whole lift, which on a shared forecourt means telling whoever controls that ground well beforehand. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The drip tray and the bar sink arrive with the top, not after it. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. The van stands for the frame as well as the top.
Would you call Stepney Green a bar tops area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop design & quotation and worktop fabrication. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. Where the use is hard, the surface is chosen for it. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. A late bar is a separate visit and the quote says so.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
A galley that is also the route to the back door is a corridor first and a kitchen second, and what the shape can take is set by the traffic going through it. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. The overhang is drawn before the layout is signed off. The material band is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What state does a Stepney Green kitchen have to be in before you template?
Two alcove pieces will not swap over however similar they look, so they are marked left and right at the bench and stay that way to the van. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. Noggins go into a stud wall before a bar is fixed to it. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. Two flats with an identical layout can want entirely different things from the same run of worktop, which is why the quote follows the run rather than the address. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Porcelain forgives the cleaning products a bar actually meets.
What if the base units are out of level?
Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. A sloping floor is not the problem. The plane the unit tops finish in is. A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. A sloping floor is a problem for the stools, not the top.
Do I have to get rid of the old tops myself in Stepney Green?
Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. The carcasses stay put. Only the surface changes. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. A bar fit is a day, not a drop.
Which materials need sealing and which do not?
A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. The bead where the sink and hob meet the stone is siliconed rather than sealed, and wants watching. No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Walls are thick, lime-plastered and built in a soft brick, so they take a scribe well and take a fixing badly. In a cellar the headroom fixes the counter height first and everything else works back from it, and the stair down is the tightest part of the route because stone carried downward is harder to control than stone carried up. Deep skirtings push the frame forward and the top covers it.
What happens if a piece is damaged on the fitting day?
Most breakages happen on the carry, which is why the route is walked and measured before anything comes off the van. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door. A dropped pan years later is a different question, and stone is remade rather than filled either way. Pieces going in on a hoist are sized to the opening and to what a crew can control in the air, which nearly always means more joins than the run would otherwise need. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. A waterfall end travels as its own piece and is bonded in place.
