Summerstown kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. One visit, our own installers.
Industrial estates and the river restrict the road network, and lorry traffic on Garratt Lane and Plough Lane makes stopping difficult at peak times. The two require completely different approaches on the same street. Older terraces along the Wandle corridor have small rear kitchens that stay galley-shaped, while the recent apartment schemes on the former stadium and industrial land are open-plan with a peninsula and an appliance tower.
Edwardian terraces are wider and taller than the Victorian houses next to them, so the kitchen usually takes a full-width rear room rather than a narrow outrigger. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.
The buildings themselves are mostly Victorian terrace, Interwar terrace and 2020s new-build apartment. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
New-build peninsulas here are fixed to a plasterboard-clad frame rather than solid cabinets, so the overhang needs brackets or a sub-frame rather than relying on the carcass.
The hallway turn and the door width, which cap the longest single piece we can physically get to the kitchen regardless of what the run measures.

Getting stone into the room
The new blocks have booked loading and a service lift; the old terraces have on-street permit bays only.
A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. That is what the morning is planned around.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop replacement and worktop templating.

Getting stone into a Summerstown kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Summerstown
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Summerstown on your patch?
Yes. Summerstown is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW17. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Wandsworth. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Summerstown be any different from anywhere else?
The rear extension is frequently original rather than added, which means it is solidly built and just as far out of square as the rest of the house. We measure the front door, the hall width and the turn into the kitchen before anything comes off the van, because a 3m piece has to swing through that corner on edge and stone does not bend to help you. The slow parts are slow for a reason. New-build peninsulas here are fixed to a plasterboard-clad frame rather than solid cabinets, so the overhang needs brackets or a sub-frame rather than relying on the carcass.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Summerstown?
Industrial estates and the river restrict the road network, and lorry traffic on Garratt Lane and Plough Lane makes stopping difficult at peak times. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.
Is Summerstown mostly worktop installation work for you?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop replacement and worktop templating. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Summerstown?
Where a partition has been built off the floor screed rather than off the slab, it moves, and a mitre bonded across that corner is the first thing to open. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
