Sundridge Park kitchens
The buildings and streets around Sundridge Park
Ask three neighbours what they paid for reception counter work in Sundridge Park and you will get three answers, all of them correct for the kitchen they were quoting. Houses around the golf course and station tend to be deep-plan with the kitchen in a rear addition, so the common job is a galley run down one side plus a short return under a window looking onto a long garden. Utility rooms are often carved out of the old outhouse or side passage. If your kitchen is a bit of both, that is common enough and it changes nothing about how we go about it.
The consumer unit and the meter often sit high on the wall at one end of the kitchen, and neither of them is going to move to suit a run of stone. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. Where the join lands is a sightline question before it is a slab question.
Where the dividing wall has come out there is a steel over the opening and a nib of the old wall left at each end, and a run turning that corner has to clear both nibs. A bay window gives a lobby with more light in it than depth, so the counter front is read against the glass and the polish gets looked at. The lobby was finished by somebody else, and the counter joins it.
What turns up on the job sheets is Edwardian villa, 1920s detached, 1930s semi and post-war infill detached. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Sundridge Park is its own job
Having worked in Sundridge Park regularly, we already know what to check before a template is booked and a slab is ordered. Sloping driveways and mature front hedges are the main issue, plus a lot of the older houses have a step up to a side gate that is too narrow for a slab, so it becomes a front-door carry with a turn at the bottom of the stairs. Original rear additions here are rarely square, so the template has to pick up a taper across the run rather than assume parallel walls. Our own installers do the fitting, so whoever templated the room is not handing the problem over to a subcontractor.
The work
What reception counters involves
Reception counter work covers the stone only: the upper counter, the transaction shelf, the return between them and any upstand behind, all made to a carcass a joiner has already built and fixed. Piece sizes are set from the way into the building before the slab is nested, so a join added for access still lands over a support instead of in open span. You are left with a desk whose join sits over a support and out of the line people look along, instead of landing wherever the slab happened to run out.
Counter work starts where the joinery finishes: a carcass built by another trade, and a stone top made to what that carcass actually turned out to be. Cable apertures are machined with a radiused internal corner, because a square internal corner in a counter top is where a crack begins. A practice converted out of a house has its reception in the front room, so the carcass is built around a chimney breast and the counter is drawn to it. Dry-assembled on the bench before the van is loaded.

The money
What it costs in Sundridge Park
Machining is where the money sits: apertures for cable and card readers, a radiused internal corner at every opening, and a mitred return between the two levels. An L has a return, and a return rarely nests neatly on a slab, so the yield question arrives earlier than it does on a straight run. The spread from £110 to £550 per square metre is the width of the catalogue rather than vagueness about price, and where you land in it is a decision about material. The transaction shelf is its own line, because it is its own piece.

The carry, and what it rules out
Block paving bedded on sand can rut under a fully loaded van, and that is said to the customer beforehand rather than explained afterwards. A reception fit is often booked outside opening hours precisely because that is when the kerb in front of the building is free. A booked bay costs less than an hour of a crew standing still.

Sundridge Park in the housing figures
On the Sundridge Park streets we cover, a large share of the housing went up between the wars. Whatever the desk stands against was put there by an earlier trade, so it is measured and not taken on trust. The knee recess appears on the drawing in millimetres.

What Sundridge Park asks for
Nothing about the houses on this patch predicts how much of this we do, because it is not housing work. What the houses ask for is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement. The stone, the machining and the crew are the same.

Getting stone into a Sundridge Park kitchen
Sloping driveways and mature front hedges are the main issue, plus a lot of the older houses have a step up to a side gate that is too narrow for a slab, so it becomes a front-door carry with a turn at the bottom of the stairs.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Sundridge Park
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Sundridge Park on your patch?
Yes. Sundridge Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR1. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bromley. Where the drive is shared, the half-hour the van spends in the way is agreed with the neighbour in advance rather than apologised for at the time. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The tail lift needs pavement, not simply a space. The measuring and the fitting are both done at the property, so there is nothing to visit or collect.
Is there anything about Sundridge Park buildings that catches reception counters out?
The windows were steel to begin with and have been swapped for plastic in openings lined out to suit, so the reveal is now deeper than the brickwork behind it. Practices in this stock are usually converted houses on or behind an interwar parade: a dental surgery, a veterinary practice or a small office with its reception in what was the front room. A parade unit is entered up a step nobody thought to measure. Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Twist in a carcass shows first at the transaction shelf.
What do you check about the route into a Sundridge Park property?
Where the garden is level and the back door is wide the pieces get staged outside on trestles and brought in one at a time as the fitters are ready for them. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The counter is sized to the way in before it is sized to the slab. A step up from the drive to the threshold turns the last two metres into a lift, and a lift is where two pairs of hands become the minimum. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. Outside opening hours is usually when the kerb is free.
Do you get much reception counters work in Sundridge Park?
Not especially, and pretending otherwise would be simple enough. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement. It is a fact about the local housing rather than about the work. The job is quoted, cut and fitted the same way wherever on the patch it lands. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. What the operator needs at the shelf outranks the elevation. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. The knee recess is not a variable between sites.
Why do two Sundridge Park kitchens the same size price differently?
The return piece is the awkward one on a slab: short, full depth, and rarely nesting neatly against the long lengths, so yield rather than area is what moves the material figure. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. A shallow shelf still needs a support run of its own. Material alone is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are never folded into that figure.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A floor that falls across the depth of a run rather than along it tips the carcasses front to back, and packing the front feet changes the overhang while it fixes the level. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. A long counter magnifies every millimetre the carcass is out. Confirm whether the reception is at ground level or up the stair, and send the carcass drawing with the chimney breast and any bay recorded on it. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. The counter stays when the tenant goes, and is chosen accordingly.
What happens when the route into a Sundridge Park kitchen is tighter than the worktop?
The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. Grass and gravel will not take a loaded trolley, so a boarded track gets laid from the gate to the door before the first piece moves. A lobby is one of the few places a piece can be staged, so the counter comes in early and stands on trestles until the carcass is ready for it. A join forced by a doorway still lands over a carcass support.
Do you take the old worktop away?
An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. The units below stay exactly as they are; only the surface is replaced. Where the van cannot turn on the plot it has to arrive already facing the right way, so the approach along the street is part of the plan. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. Whoever holds the lease usually holds the loading bay.
Can the price change after templating?
Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. Once the carcasses are levelled the gap under the plinth varies along the run, and that varying gap is the honest record of what the floor is doing. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. The scribe is cut in the shop, eased on site, and no further.
Is a drainer groove worth it in a small Sundridge Park kitchen?
Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. Where there is no room for a separate drainer, grooves are usually what gets specified instead. The plaster is a thick float and set over brick that has blown in patches, so a wall sounds solid in one place and hollow a hand-span away. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. The transaction shelf carries the detail the upper counter hides.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
