Sundridge Park kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Edwardian villa1920s detached1930s semipost-war infill detached

These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. The wall decides, not the brochure.

Original rear additions here are rarely square, so the template has to pick up a taper across the run rather than assume parallel walls. Utility rooms are often carved out of the old outhouse or side passage. Houses around the golf course and station tend to be deep-plan with the kitchen in a rear addition, so the common job is a galley run down one side plus a short return under a window looking onto a long garden.

The classic arrangement is the original back room with a later extension bolted onto it, so the kitchen is two ages of building in one room. These kitchens are nearly always retiled at least twice, and stripping the old tiles takes the bottom course of plaster with it because the original laminate top ran underneath the tiles rather than up to them. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.

The mix here is Edwardian villa, 1920s detached, 1930s semi and post-war infill detached. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

period detached houses and villas

Getting stone into the room

Sloping driveways and mature front hedges are the main issue, plus a lot of the older houses have a step up to a side gate that is too narrow for a slab, so it becomes a front-door carry with a turn at the bottom of the stairs.

A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. Joint positions follow from that.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Getting stone into a Sundridge Park kitchen

Sloping driveways and mature front hedges are the main issue, plus a lot of the older houses have a step up to a side gate that is too narrow for a slab, so it becomes a front-door carry with a turn at the bottom of the stairs.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Sundridge Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Sundridge Park?

Yes. Sundridge Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR1. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bromley. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Upstands travel in a crate and can wait on the van, which gives some flexibility a full-height panel does not. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Sundridge Park change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

A side alley and a back door mean most pieces go in whole, and it is the alley width rather than the front door that decides it. These kitchens are nearly always retiled at least twice, and stripping the old tiles takes the bottom course of plaster with it because the original laminate top ran underneath the tiles rather than up to them. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. Original rear additions here are rarely square, so the template has to pick up a taper across the run rather than assume parallel walls.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Sundridge Park?

Sloping driveways and mature front hedges are the main issue, plus a lot of the older houses have a step up to a side gate that is too narrow for a slab, so it becomes a front-door carry with a turn at the bottom of the stairs. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. Joint positions follow from that.

Do you get much worktop splashbacks & upstands work in Sundridge Park?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Sockets final before template. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.

Why do two Sundridge Park kitchens the same size price differently?

Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. The old tiling must be off and the wall made good and dry before templating, not on fitting day. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. Decided before fabrication, not after.
