What the kitchens here are actually like

Solid brick with a sand and cement render is firm to work against and reliably out of plumb across the length of a run. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.

Houses around the golf course and station tend to be deep-plan with the kitchen in a rear addition, so the common job is a galley run down one side plus a short return under a window looking onto a long garden. Utility rooms are often carved out of the old outhouse or side passage. Original rear additions here are rarely square, so the template has to pick up a taper across the run rather than assume parallel walls.

The chimney breast in the corner has usually been left in place, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends. What catches people out is the junction between the old floor and the extension floor, which is rarely at the same level, so a run carrying across it needs the units packed before stone goes on. Units kept, surface changed, one day.

What we are usually templating in is Edwardian villa, 1920s detached, 1930s semi and post-war infill detached. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered from the New Malden patch. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Sloping driveways and mature front hedges are the main issue, plus a lot of the older houses have a step up to a side gate that is too narrow for a slab, so it becomes a front-door carry with a turn at the bottom of the stairs.

Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. We stage the strip-out so the old tops leave in one trip rather than trickling out across the afternoon. The waste run is planned, not improvised.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Sundridge Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Sundridge Park, or just list it?

Yes. Sundridge Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR1. It is run from the New Malden side, covering South West London & Surrey. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop replacement in Sundridge Park?

These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. The junction between the old floor and the extension floor is where a run crossing it needs packing before stone goes on. What is under the old top is the real question. Original rear additions here are rarely square, so the template has to pick up a taper across the run rather than assume parallel walls.

Is access a problem in Sundridge Park?

Sloping driveways and mature front hedges are the main issue, plus a lot of the older houses have a step up to a side gate that is too narrow for a slab, so it becomes a front-door carry with a turn at the bottom of the stairs. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. It sets what the day actually looks like. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it.

Is worktop replacement common in Sundridge Park?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A plumber either side of us. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead.

What decides the price of a worktop in Sundridge Park?

Two runs meeting at an internal corner is the most common shape we fit, and the corner is where the decisions are. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Unlock the side gate and clear the alley of bins, bikes and pots, and arrange a plumber for the sink and an electrician if the hob is hard-wired. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Sound carcasses are the condition.
