Sydenham Hill kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

large Victorian detached villa1930s detached1960s-70s private estategated modern detached

Walls that are old, thick and rarely straight make dry-laying and scribing the bulk of the day. Socket positions, sill heights and wall flatness are the three things that settle this, and all three are properties of the building. The wall decides, not the brochure.

Large detached houses along the ridge, usually with a full kitchen-breakfast room, separate utility and pantry, runs over 4m, big islands with waterfall ends, and clients who want a specific block of material rather than whatever slab is in stock.

The big-island jobs come from up here and they need a proper lift plan, a 3.2m waterfall piece over gravel is not a two-man carry. Long private drives, steep approaches off the hill road, gravel and gated entrances, and houses sitting well above or below their gate at the end of a stepped path.

These houses usually sit in their own grounds with a long approach, so the carry from van to door is longer than anything inside the building. Behind a range cooker with gas burners, granite or sintered stone is the sensible pick; quartz has a resin binder and does not enjoy sustained radiant heat at close range, so keep it out of the immediate hob zone or specify a different material for that panel. Decided before fabrication starts.

What we are usually templating in is large Victorian detached villa, 1930s detached, 1960s-70s private estate and gated modern detached. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Getting stone into the room

Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. It decides panel size before anything is cut.

What gets asked for here

This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

Questions

Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Sydenham Hill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Sydenham Hill?

Yes. Sydenham Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE26. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Lewisham. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Sydenham Hill change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

These houses usually sit in their own grounds with a long approach, so the carry from van to door is longer than anything inside the building. Behind a range cooker with gas burners, granite or sintered stone is the sensible pick; quartz has a resin binder and does not enjoy sustained radiant heat at close range, so keep it out of the immediate hob zone or specify a different material for that panel. Decided before fabrication starts. The big-island jobs come from up here and they need a proper lift plan, a 3.2m waterfall piece over gravel is not a two-man carry.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Sydenham Hill?

Long private drives, steep approaches off the hill road, gravel and gated entrances, and houses sitting well above or below their gate at the end of a stepped path. Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. Joint positions follow from that.

Is Sydenham Hill really a worktop splashbacks & upstands area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Same batch, same run, same day. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Sockets final before template.

Why do two Sydenham Hill kitchens the same size price differently?

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Corners get their own pieces. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. An upstand rides what a panel exposes. The range and extractor must be sited and the window cill finished before the template, as both fix the vertical limits of the splashback. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Decided before fabrication, not after.
