Sydenham Hill kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Walls that are old, thick and rarely straight make dry-laying and scribing the bulk of the day. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. One visit, our own installers.
Large detached houses along the ridge, usually with a full kitchen-breakfast room, separate utility and pantry, runs over 4m, big islands with waterfall ends, and clients who want a specific block of material rather than whatever slab is in stock.
The big-island jobs come from up here and they need a proper lift plan, a 3.2m waterfall piece over gravel is not a two-man carry. Long private drives, steep approaches off the hill road, gravel and gated entrances, and houses sitting well above or below their gate at the end of a stepped path.
Arts and Crafts houses have deep eaves, low windows and inglenook recesses, so the kitchen has more corners and reveals than its floor area suggests. What costs time is the distance from where the van can park to the door, often down a long drive or across gravel, so we plan the carry with enough hands and board the route where it crosses gravel or lawn. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
On these streets the housing is large Victorian detached villa, 1930s detached, 1960s-70s private estate and gated modern detached. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
The carry distance from the van to the door, which is often long enough that the piece has to be rested and re-gripped part way.

What gets asked for here
Second or third on the list around here, after worktop design & quotation. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

The shape of the run
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The join is the last thing finished.
Access
Getting stone into a Sydenham Hill kitchen
Long private drives, steep approaches off the hill road, gravel and gated entrances, and houses sitting well above or below their gate at the end of a stepped path.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.
3–7 working days
From template to fitted, working days from template. The same on this patch as every other.

Questions
Worktop installation in Sydenham Hill
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Sydenham Hill on your patch?
Yes. Sydenham Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE26. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Lewisham. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Sydenham Hill be any different from anywhere else?
Handmade brick and lime plaster move visibly along a run, and a straight-cut back edge shows it immediately. Access through the property is usually the simplest of any archetype, with wide doors and generous rooms, so we can often carry a full-length piece straight in without a planned join. The slow parts are slow for a reason. The big-island jobs come from up here and they need a proper lift plan, a 3.2m waterfall piece over gravel is not a two-man carry.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Sydenham Hill?
Long private drives, steep approaches off the hill road, gravel and gated entrances, and houses sitting well above or below their gate at the end of a stepped path. Estate roads are often too tight for a long-wheelbase van to turn, so the carry starts a good deal further from the door than a map suggests. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around.
Is worktop installation common in Sydenham Hill?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. The prep list is not optional.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Sydenham Hill?
Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Give us the hardest, shortest approach to the door you can, clear of parked cars, and warn us of any soft ground, steps or gravel on the route. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
