Temple Fortune kitchens
The buildings and streets around Temple Fortune
The single biggest variable in what reception counter work costs in Temple Fortune is not the material you pick but the room you are asking it to fit. Flats above the distinctive shopping parades have small, awkwardly shaped kitchens set into the roof and gable spaces with sloping ceilings that rule out wall units above part of the run. The surrounding houses are comfortable interwar semis where the kitchen is knocked through to the dining room for a 3.6m run and a peninsula. Bring us the problem rather than the diagnosis. Working out what you have got is the first thing we do.
The scullery and the kitchen were knocked into one at some point, and the stub of the old dividing wall is still there under the plaster. The lower transaction shelf sits at the height a person in a wheelchair can be served at, and that height is fixed on the drawing before anything else about the desk is. The transaction shelf carries the detail the upper counter hides.
The original room is timber over a ventilated void and the newer half is a slab, so the floor gives underfoot on one side of the junction and not on the other. A dental or veterinary practice in this stock is usually a converted house, so the reception sits in what was the front room and the carcass is built around a chimney breast. A parade unit is entered up a step nobody thought to measure.
The building types here are Arts and Crafts style parade with flats above, 1920s-30s semi and purpose-built mansion block. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Temple Fortune is its own job
The practical side of a worktop in Temple Fortune is settled long before anyone chooses a colour, and it is worth saying out loud. Flats over the parades are reached by narrow shared stairs from the rear yards, with no lift and a turn at each landing; Finchley Road frontage has loading restrictions and constant bus traffic. Sloping ceilings over part of the run mean the slab cannot be tilted upright at that end, so it has to enter the room already close to horizontal. It goes on the drawing, you agree the drawing, and the workshop cuts to that. Nothing is decided on the day.
The work
What reception counters involves
Support for any overhang at the public face belongs to the drawing, whether that turns out to be a steel flat, a plywood deck or a gable the joiner adds for us. The whole desk is dry-assembled at the works, returns and openings included, and checked against the drawing before a single piece is wrapped. You are left with a desk whose join sits over a support and out of the line people look along, instead of landing wherever the slab happened to run out.
This is commercial fit-out work cut on the same saw as a kitchen, with an entirely different set of questions attached to it. A curved front is cut on a waterjet from the same drawing the joiner built the carcass to, so the two radii agree. A practice converted out of a house has its reception in the front room, so the carcass is built around a chimney breast and the counter is drawn to it. Dry-assembled on the bench before the van is loaded.

The money
What it costs in Temple Fortune
What the joiner builds moves the figure as much as what we cut, because a carcass arriving square and level takes hours off the fitting day. A peninsula has a finished end and often an overhang, so it carries edge work a wall-side run never does. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre. The more useful question is not which end of that you are at, but how many operations the cut list carries. Yield on a counter is worked out before the price leaves us.

The shape of the run
A breakfast bar on the outer side is an overhang like any other, and the support under it is sized for people leaning on the end rather than for the weight of the stone alone. A long straight counter is far easier to draw than to support, because the knee recess takes out the leg the span would otherwise have used. Overhang at the public face is agreed before the carcass is built.

What Temple Fortune asks for
Not a domestic job, so it is not ranked against the streets around it. Those streets generate worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation. Same slabs, same saw, same installers.

Temple Fortune in the housing figures
In Temple Fortune, hardly any of it is newly built, so what the old surface was fixed to matters more than what goes on top. Several desks across one estate come off a single slab run, or they will never read as a set. Support positions are agreed ahead of nesting.

Getting stone into a Temple Fortune kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Which postcodes do you cover around Temple Fortune?
Yes. Temple Fortune is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW11. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Barnet. Time-limited bays are camera-enforced across a lot of managed estates, so the unload runs to the clock and the van moves off afterwards. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The van stays put while the carcass is being scribed to. We come to the kitchen to template and again to fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What do the kitchens in Temple Fortune do to reception counters?
Plaster in the older half is a sand and cement backing on brick while the newer half is board on dabs, so the same fixing bites in one wall and breaks through the other. Practices in this stock are usually converted houses on or behind an interwar parade: a dental surgery, a veterinary practice or a small office with its reception in what was the front room. Where the hall is tall, the light finds every seam in the counter. Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. What is out of true gets measured, not talked around.
Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Temple Fortune kitchens?
A window sill or a radiator on the half-landing takes the corner out of the turn at precisely the point the piece needs that corner. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. A long top on edge sweeps wider than the crew carrying it. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. A red route puts a clock on a counter that will not be rushed.
Would you call Temple Fortune a reception counters area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. What the operator needs at the shelf outranks the elevation. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. The knee recess is not a variable between sites.
What decides the price of a worktop in Temple Fortune?
A peninsula projects into circulation space, so its outer corners usually take a radius rather than a point, and that radius is agreed at template rather than assumed. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. A join in the shelf and a join in the top belong in one place. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.
What do I need to sort out first?
Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. A lobby floor that falls is packed out under the joinery. Confirm whether the reception is at ground level or up the stair, and send the carcass drawing with the chimney breast and any bay recorded on it. An owner paying for this directly tends to want the reasoning as much as the number, so a quote that explains why a join sits where it does is worth more than a cheaper one that does not. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. The counter stays when the tenant goes, and is chosen accordingly.
Will I be able to see the joins?
Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. Veining carries through a join where both pieces come off the same slab, which is decided at nesting. A join is glued and clamped flush on the day, so it is fixed rather than something to be undone. Peninsula tops are often the longest single piece in the kitchen, so if anything in the layout is going to force a second slab it is generally this one. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. The front edge is the one everybody touches, so it is drawn first.
Is removal and disposal included on a Temple Fortune job?
The tap and waste have to be disconnected by a plumber before we start and reconnected once the stone is in. If you want the old top kept for a garage or a utility, say so and it stays on site. Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. A reception fit is often booked outside opening hours precisely because that is when the kerb in front of the building is free. Where the bay is booked by the hour, pieces come off in fitting order.
Does a stone worktop need sealing?
Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. The drains run down the side alley to a gully and an inspection cover near the back door, and the sink waste has always gone out on that side of the house. The carcass is built around a chimney breast or into a bay, so the counter is drawn to a shape the joiner had to invent rather than to a rectangle, and the return between the upper counter and the transaction shelf rarely nests neatly against the long piece. Housing office counters get cleaned harder than they get used.
Can the sink be undermounted rather than sat on top?
If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. A peninsula is an island with one end tied to a run, which means the join between them has to be planned rather than allowed to happen. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. Setting out starts at the entrance end and works inward.

Kareem did the countertops dur8ng my kitchen remodel, and I was so impressed that I had him back to do the laundry room as well, which tells you everything you need to know. He is an absolute gem. Shows up when he says he will (which, let’s be honest, is rarer than it should be), does beautifully work, and clearly takes real pride in what he does. The countertops look fantastic, and he even went above and beyond, using leftover quartz to create an extra counter in my bathroom. Genius. He’s kind, professional, reasonably priced, and just gets on with it. No fuss, no drama, just a job very well done. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and will absolutely be using him again if the need arises. Happy to answer any questions.
