Thornton Heath kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. A single day, planned properly.
Long streets of bay-fronted terraces where the kitchen sits in a two-storey back addition, giving a narrow L with the sink under the rear window and the hob on the party wall. Side-return infills are increasingly common and turn that L into a 4m run plus a small island.
The party wall in these back additions is rarely straight along its full length, so a long side-return run gets scribed in sections rather than templated as one flat edge.
A long piece has to come through the front door, down the hall, round the newel post and through a doorway with a step down into the addition. In most Victorian terraces the kitchen sits in the back addition, so you get a narrow galley with one outside wall and nothing square to work off. What is under the old top is the real question.
The mix here is Victorian bay-fronted terrace, Edwardian terrace, inter-war semi and flat conversion. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Very tight. Parking on both sides, permit zones, no off-street parking on most of the terraces, and no side access, so everything goes through the front door and down a hall with a stair to one side.
Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. The strip-out is planned around it.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop templating comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into a Thornton Heath kitchen
Very tight. Parking on both sides, permit zones, no off-street parking on most of the terraces, and no side access, so everything goes through the front door and down a hall with a stair to one side.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Thornton Heath
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Thornton Heath?
Yes. Thornton Heath is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR7. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. Enforcement zones rarely accept a trade van unloading stone as an exemption, so this gets sorted before the date is confirmed rather than argued about afterwards. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Thornton Heath change how worktop replacement works?
A long piece has to come through the front door, down the hall, round the newel post and through a doorway with a step down into the addition. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Units kept, surface changed, one day. The party wall in these back additions is rarely straight along its full length, so a long side-return run gets scribed in sections rather than templated as one flat edge.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Thornton Heath?
Do you do much worktop replacement around Thornton Heath?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.
Why do two Thornton Heath kitchens the same size price differently?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. Found at template, not on fit day. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Units kept, surface changed.
