Thornton Heath kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. The drawing decides it before the saw does.
Long streets of bay-fronted terraces where the kitchen sits in a two-storey back addition, giving a narrow L with the sink under the rear window and the hob on the party wall. Side-return infills are increasingly common and turn that L into a 4m run plus a small island.
The party wall in these back additions is rarely straight along its full length, so a long side-return run gets scribed in sections rather than templated as one flat edge.
Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. The bench proves it before the van moves.
What turns up on the job sheets is Victorian bay-fronted terrace, Edwardian terrace, inter-war semi and flat conversion. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop fabrication, in short
- Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
- Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
- A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
- Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.
Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop templating, worktop replacement and worktop installation come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Getting stone into the room
Very tight. Parking on both sides, permit zones, no off-street parking on most of the terraces, and no side access, so everything goes through the front door and down a hall with a stair to one side.
Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. That is the last thing settled before dispatch.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop fabrication in Thornton Heath
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Thornton Heath?
Yes. Thornton Heath is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR7. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. That is the last thing settled before dispatch. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Thornton Heath change how worktop fabrication works?
The back addition is a narrow two-storey outrigger with a single external wall, and the kitchen galley runs the length of it. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. Settled on the drawing, cut once. The party wall in these back additions is rarely straight along its full length, so a long side-return run gets scribed in sections rather than templated as one flat edge.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Thornton Heath?
Very tight. Parking on both sides, permit zones, no off-street parking on most of the terraces, and no side access, so everything goes through the front door and down a hall with a stair to one side. A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.
Is Thornton Heath really a worktop fabrication area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop replacement and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Proven on the bench before dispatch. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Nested for the job in front of us.
Why do two Thornton Heath kitchens the same size price differently?
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. Every join sits over a gable. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Machined to the real line. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. Sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch, whoever supplied them. Dry-assembled before it leaves.
