Upton Park kitchens
The buildings and streets around Upton Park
Over the years the reception counters we have done in Upton Park have followed a few recognisable patterns, and knowing which one you are in saves a great deal of argument later. Large multi-generational households are common, so kitchens get pushed to the back of the house and extended, with 3m to 4m of run, a big freestanding range cooker and heavy-duty use rather than a display island. A number of houses have a second prep kitchen or utility area added off the main one. A worktop that fits is a worktop that was measured. The description is background, the template is the actual instruction.
Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. A counter is measured in the lobby it will stand in.
The house is designed to the width it was allowed, so the kitchen is long and narrow and the run has no real choice about where it goes. The commercial work in a neighbourhood of new blocks is concierge desks and ground-floor fit-outs: a managed lobby needing a counter that works as a post point and a security position at once, or a shell unit turned into a dental practice or a clinic. Protected finishes decide the fixings before the drawing is finished.
The buildings themselves are mostly Edwardian terrace, converted terrace flat and 2010s onwards stadium-site apartment block. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Upton Park is its own job
We would rather tell you what a fit in Upton Park is going to involve now than discover it with a slab in the hallway. The market street and the surrounding shopping parades are congested through the day with loading restrictions, so residential drops are best mid-morning off the side streets. The redeveloped stadium site apartments have their own service entrance and lift booking system, quite unlike the terraces around them. Heavy cooking use here means people want deep upstands and a solid splashback behind the range, not a 6mm glass panel. We template Upton Park kitchens after the units are in and levelled, which is the only point at which the real measurements exist.
The work
What reception counters involves
The lower serving surface is part of the same order rather than an extra, because a desk without one cannot serve a visitor who is seated. Piece sizes are set from the way into the building before the slab is nested, so a join added for access still lands over a support instead of in open span. You get openings machined for the equipment you actually have, not holes cut through a finished top with a diamond bit in a busy lobby.
Counters are made in pieces sized to the way in and joined over supports the joiner has already built. Cable apertures are machined with a radiused internal corner, because a square internal corner in a counter top is where a crack begins. A concierge desk in a managed block works as a post point and a security position at once, and the low shelf carries both. Dry-assembled on the bench before the van is loaded.

The money
What it costs in Upton Park
A counter is priced by its pieces rather than by its frontage, because the two heights, the return and the knee recess are separate operations before they are one desk. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Thickness, finish and colour move a slab within the £110 to £550 supply band before anyone touches it, so that figure is settled by what you pick rather than by the room. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

Upton Park in the housing figures
On the Upton Park streets we cover, the great majority of the housing predates the First World War. On a room that size the cut-outs cost more than the area. Whatever the carcass is out by lands at the transaction shelf, where there is no packing space underneath. The staff side is finished to the same standard as the public side.

What Upton Park asks for
Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop installation, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop design & quotation is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The carry, and what it rules out
The lift has to be booked and blanketed before anything moves, and that booking needs to cover the old tops coming out as well as the new stone going in. A finished lobby is almost always still in use, so the floor is covered and the route boarded before a single piece leaves the van. A long top on edge sweeps wider than the crew carrying it.
Access
Getting stone into an Upton Park kitchen
The market street and the surrounding shopping parades are congested through the day with loading restrictions, so residential drops are best mid-morning off the side streets. The redeveloped stadium site apartments have their own service entrance and lift booking system, quite unlike the terraces around them.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Upton Park
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do your own fitters come out to Upton Park?
Yes. Upton Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E13, E6. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Newham. A market day closes the street to traffic for the morning and hands it back in the afternoon, which moves the visit rather than cancelling it. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Trolleys cross block paving badly, so boards go down first. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Upton Park change how reception counters works?
Rooflights over the rear bring light straight down onto the worktop, which shows a polished finish and any step at a join. The lobby was finished by the developer, so the counter is scribed to stone, terrazzo or a boarded wall somebody else laid, and that face is measured rather than assumed square. A desk seen from a whole floor is finished on every edge. Dot-and-dab plasterboard sounds solid and is hollow behind, so anything fixed through it has to hit a dab or a batten rather than a void. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. A lobby floor that falls is packed out under the joinery.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Upton Park?
Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Where the lift will not take it, the join is designed rather than risked. A timed school street shuts the road either side of the school day, so the van goes in between those two windows or it does not go in. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. One space, one visit, and the counter goes in whole.
Is Upton Park really a reception counters area?
Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop design & quotation. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Where an annexe has been built or converted, its floor and its walls are newer than the main house and behave differently under the same run. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. A weekend fit is planned as a weekend fit from the outset. Extended households run kitchens hard, and that pushes the specification towards granite or sintered stone rather than a light quartz. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A repeatable counter needs a repeatable material.
What am I actually paying for, line by line?
A run that stops in mid-air at the open end needs a finished end rather than a cut one, and that end takes the same edge work as the whole front. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. The public side and the staff side take different details. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.
Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Upton Park?
Taped internal angles in plasterboard belly at the corner, so the run picks up a few millimetres over the last 300mm and a plan-angle mitre will not close. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. Nothing on a counter is corrected with sealant. Send the lift car internal dimensions and the loading bay rules with the carcass dimensions, and have the operator mark where the payment terminal and cable grommets really go. Two flats with an identical layout can want entirely different things from the same run of worktop, which is why the quote follows the run rather than the address. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. The counter outlives the tenancy more often than not.
Can you fit stone I have already bought for an Upton Park kitchen?
Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. How much slab you hold matters: upstands and any remake have to come out of the same batch. Supply through us runs £110 to £550 per square metre for the slab alone, which is the line you would be removing. Two households cooking in one kitchen means two of most things, and the run has to carry a second sink or a second oven without losing its working length. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. Fit-out programmes slip toward the counter, never away from it.
Do you quote Upton Park jobs by the square metre?
Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Where a partition has been built off the floor screed rather than off the slab, it moves, and a mitre bonded across that corner is the first thing to open. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. The template is taken to the carcass as built.
How much upkeep is a stone worktop?
Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Bleach and limescale remover harm a polished finish rather than clean it, whichever material is on the units. The party walls are new and built to current sound standards, so they are thick, true and take a fixing well. A neighbourhood of new blocks means concierge desks: a managed lobby with a counter working as a post point and a security position at the same time. The lobby was finished by somebody else, and the counter joins it.
What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?
A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. Where a run finishes hard against a wall the last few millimetres are scribed, and where it finishes in open floor it is cut square and polished, which is two different jobs on one length. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. Nothing is drawn square that the carcass did not build square.
