Wallington kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Edwardian villa1930s semi1930s detached1960s flats

Long perimeter runs and an island mean level has to hold across the whole room rather than along any one wall. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. The drawing decides it before the saw does.

Tree-lined roads near the station with substantial Edwardian and inter-war houses, so kitchens are often in a rear return that gets widened, giving a long run plus a peninsula or a compact island. A fair number of the Edwardian villas have been split into flats with kitchens fitted into former bedrooms.

Recessed Edwardian porches are narrower than the front door opening, so the real constraint is the porch, and we measure that rather than the door frame.

A large villa has wide doors, a generous hall and somewhere to park, so the joins that go in are chosen for layout rather than forced by the route. Access is off a drive and through wide doors, so for once the piece size is not the constraint - the joins that go in are the ones we choose for layout and veining, not the ones the building forces. Settled on the drawing, cut once.

On these streets the housing is Edwardian villa, 1930s semi, 1930s detached and 1960s flats. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room

Mature street trees with low branches make van positioning awkward on some roads, and the villas sit behind long front paths with a tiled step up to a recessed porch.

A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. Once the cut-outs are machined there is no going back on it.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Worktop fabrication in Wallington

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Wallington on your patch?

Yes. Wallington is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM6. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Sutton. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop fabrication in Wallington be any different from anywhere else?

These kitchens are big rooms with long perimeter runs and an island, so level has to hold across the whole floor rather than along one wall. Access is off a drive and through wide doors, so for once the piece size is not the constraint - the joins that go in are the ones we choose for layout and veining, not the ones the building forces. Settled on the drawing, cut once. Recessed Edwardian porches are narrower than the front door opening, so the real constraint is the porch, and we measure that rather than the door frame.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Wallington?

Mature street trees with low branches make van positioning awkward on some roads, and the villas sit behind long front paths with a tiled step up to a recessed porch. Carrying through the house means protecting the whole route first: floor boarded, banister padded, and the front door held open on a wedge rather than by hand. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Is Wallington really a worktop fabrication area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop templating, worktop installation and worktop replacement. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Nested for the job in front of us.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Wallington?

Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The range or Aga, the sink and the tap all need to be confirmed by model before nesting, because their clearances and hole positions set where the island can be cut. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Dry-assembled before it leaves.
