West Hampstead kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. The room as it is, to the millimetre.
Heavy conversion-flat territory, with purpose-built Edwardian mansion flats where the kitchen sits fixed off the hall, plus terraced houses split into upper and lower flats. The recurring job is replacing a tired laminate galley run of 2.6-3.2m and adding upstands, rather than reconfiguring the room.
West End Lane is congested with buses and has almost no loading, so you work off the residential side streets under a Monday to Friday CPZ. Mansion blocks are commonly three or four storeys with no lift and a communal stair shared with other residents, which has to be cleared before any carrying starts.
Cornice, picture rails and deep skirting survive in converted rooms, so the run stands off the wall and the back edge follows the units rather than the plaster. The template plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
The mix here is Victorian terrace, Edwardian mansion block, conversion flat and modern development. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered on our central and north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The building, and what it does to the job
Replacement work here means templating over existing units, so check for out-of-level base cabinets before cutting, because decades of settlement in these blocks show up as a 10mm fall across a 3m run.

Getting stone into the room
A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop templating in West Hampstead
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in West Hampstead, or just list it?
Yes. West Hampstead is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW6. It is worked on our central and north London run, along with the rest of Camden. A controlled parking zone means either a visitor permit sorted in advance or a suspended bay, and a suspension is applied for days ahead rather than on the morning. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop templating in West Hampstead?
Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the template picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Replacement work here means templating over existing units, so check for out-of-level base cabinets before cutting, because decades of settlement in these blocks show up as a 10mm fall across a 3m run.
Is access a problem in West Hampstead?

Do you do much worktop templating around West Hampstead?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. Appliances on site, not on order.
What decides the price of a worktop in West Hampstead?
The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. Real angles, not plan angles. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
