Frognal kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Old plaster built up over decades makes the scribing heavy, and that time has to be in the plan rather than found on the day. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. Units fitted, fixed and level first.
Big detached and semi-detached houses where the kitchen is a large rear room or a purpose-built extension, so you are specifying a 4m-plus perimeter with a full island and often a separate utility or pantry run.
A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van. Clients here more often want the same stone carried across island, worktops and a full-height splashback.
These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. Mansion-block kitchens usually have a serviced riser or boxed pipework somewhere in the run, and the boxing is rarely the same depth from one end to the other, so the template takes the depth at worktop height at several points rather than one reading. Two to three hours, once the units are in.
The mix here is large detached Victorian villa, Arts and Crafts house, Edwardian house and 1930s block. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered on our central and north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

The building, and what it does to the job
Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.

Getting stone into the room
Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking.
Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Worktop templating in Frognal
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Frognal on your patch?
Yes. Frognal is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW3. It is worked on our central and north London run, along with the rest of Camden. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop templating in Frognal be any different from anywhere else?
These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. Anything that has to stay accessible - stopcocks, gas meters, riser access panels - is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Frognal?
Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking. A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. That is part of what the visit is for.
Do you get much worktop templating work in Frognal?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Batching several kitchens together is the one situation where buying a whole slab is cheaper per kitchen rather than more expensive. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Frognal?
A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Boxing and riser casings built, cased and finished to their final surface, units fixed and levelled, and building access, lift booking and porter arrangements agreed so both the template visit and the later fit can run. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. No stone is cut from a plan.
