Frognal kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Old plaster built up over decades makes the scribing heavy, and that time has to be in the plan rather than found on the day. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.
Big detached and semi-detached houses where the kitchen is a large rear room or a purpose-built extension, so you are specifying a 4m-plus perimeter with a full island and often a separate utility or pantry run.
Clients here more often want the same stone carried across island, worktops and a full-height splashback. A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van.
Inter-war purpose-built blocks have curved external walls and steel windows, so a run along an outside wall is following a genuine curve rather than a bow. This is the most managed day we do. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.
On these streets the housing is large detached Victorian villa, Arts and Crafts house, Edwardian house and 1930s block. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our central and north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
period detached houses and villas
Getting stone into the room
Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop design & quotation comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

The building, and what it does to the job
Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.

The shape of the run
If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The join is the last thing finished.

Getting stone into a Frognal kitchen
Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking. A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.
3–7 working days
From template to fitted, working days from template. The same on this patch as every other.

Access told straight
If the route forces an extra join, you hear that at quote stage, not on the day.
Questions
Worktop installation in Frognal
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Frognal, or just list it?
Yes. Frognal is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW3. It is worked on our central and north London run, along with the rest of Camden. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop installation in Frognal?
Inter-war purpose-built blocks have curved external walls and steel windows, so a run along an outside wall is following a genuine curve rather than a bow. This is the most managed day we do. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Full-height splashbacks and island returns mean batch-matching matters more here than access does, so reserve slabs from one block and lay them out before cutting.
Is access a problem in Frognal?
Wide but steep roads with in-and-out drives, so vehicle access to the door is usually good and the constraint is the long gravel drive and the steps up to the entrance rather than the parking. A few houses have gated entrances too narrow for a long-wheelbase van. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.
Is worktop installation common in Frognal?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A licensed shared house has fire-door and escape-route rules that decide how and when stone can be carried through the common parts. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional. Where a single building holds several small kitchens, the work arrives as one job rather than four, and it should be cut off the same slab run so the batches genuinely match. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.
What decides the price of a worktop in Frognal?
If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The join is the last thing finished. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Legs bottoming out on hard concrete or an uneven screed mean the tops of the carcasses are not one plane, and that is picked up at template rather than on fitting day. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Have the works booking confirmed with the managing agent or porter in advance, with the lift slot and any parking permit or bay suspension in place. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door, communal or otherwise. Protection goes down first.
