Wimbledon Park kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Edwardian terraceVictorian terracePurpose-built 1930s flat

Lath and plaster, a settled floor and a hall with a turn in it are the three things that decide how this job runs. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. One visit, our own installers.

The terraces on the streets sloping down to the lake are the classic side-return job: the alley is filled in, the kitchen widens to about 3.6m and takes a long run under a rooflight with a modest island opposite. Where houses are split into upper and lower conversions, the top flat usually keeps a narrow galley in the old back bedroom.

Permit-holder bays fill up from mid-morning and the streets are narrow enough that a parked van blocks a lane.

The back addition is a narrow two-storey outrigger with a single external wall, and the kitchen galley runs the length of it. We measure the front door, the hall width and the turn into the kitchen before anything comes off the van, because a 3m piece has to swing through that corner on edge and stone does not bend to help you. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.

The mix here is Edwardian terrace, Victorian terrace and Purpose-built 1930s flat. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The building, and what it does to the job

Extension floors here are often laid before the units go in and settle unevenly, so the base cabinets need packing and re-levelling on template day or the joint on a long run opens up.

What gets asked for here

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop templating. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

Getting stone into the room

Upper conversion flats are reached by a straight but tight internal stair with a half-landing turn, so long lengths have to be measured against the stairwell diagonal before ordering.

Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. None of it is worked out on the doorstep.

Getting stone into a Wimbledon Park kitchen

Permit-holder bays fill up from mid-morning and the streets are narrow enough that a parked van blocks a lane. Upper conversion flats are reached by a straight but tight internal stair with a half-landing turn, so long lengths have to be measured against the stairwell diagonal before ordering.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Wimbledon Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Wimbledon Park on your patch?

Yes. Wimbledon Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW19. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Merton. Permit hours are what matters, not the permit itself, because a bay that frees up at six in the evening is no use for a template at ten. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop installation in Wimbledon Park be any different from anywhere else?

The back addition is a narrow two-storey outrigger with a single external wall, and the kitchen galley runs the length of it. We measure the front door, the hall width and the turn into the kitchen before anything comes off the van, because a 3m piece has to swing through that corner on edge and stone does not bend to help you. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Extension floors here are often laid before the units go in and settle unevenly, so the base cabinets need packing and re-levelling on template day or the joint on a long run opens up.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Wimbledon Park?

Permit-holder bays fill up from mid-morning and the streets are narrow enough that a parked van blocks a lane. Upper conversion flats are reached by a straight but tight internal stair with a half-landing turn, so long lengths have to be measured against the stairwell diagonal before ordering. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around.

Do you do much worktop installation around Wimbledon Park?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. One visit, done properly.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Wimbledon Park?

Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
