Alibon kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.
In the houses, the pattern is the usual scullery-plus-larder conversion into a single L, often with the back door repositioned during the works. Eastern Becontree housing towards Dagenham, similar house types but with more maisonettes and low-rise flats mixed in, so a share of the work is first-floor kitchens with a fixed narrow footprint.
A maisonette puts the kitchen on one of two levels, so an internal staircase may be part of the route as well as the communal one. Ex-council flats and maisonettes are built in dense concrete and blockwork, so anything that has to be fixed back, such as brackets under a peninsula or support for an end panel, goes in with proper anchors and an SDS rather than plasterboard fixings. Units kept, surface changed, one day.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to 1930s LCC cottage estate house, ex-council semi and post-war maisonette. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
Maisonette stairs here are external and often steep, so we cut to a length two people can carry safely up them rather than the longest possible piece.
Boxed-in soil stacks and service risers in the corner of the run, which eat into the worktop depth and have to be scribed around rather than cut square.

Getting stone into the room
Estate roads with easy parking, but maisonette blocks mean an external stair or shared entrance and a first-floor carry with a turn at the top.

The shape of the run
Two runs meeting at an internal corner is the most common shape we fit, and the corner is where the decisions are. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Height change is checked before we cut.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop templating and worktop installation.

Getting stone into a Alibon kitchen
Estate roads with easy parking, but maisonette blocks mean an external stair or shared entrance and a first-floor carry with a turn at the top.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Alibon
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Alibon, or just list it?
Yes. Alibon is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM10. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Barking and Dagenham. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. We stage the strip-out so the old tops leave in one trip rather than trickling out across the afternoon. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop replacement in Alibon?
A maisonette puts the kitchen on one of two levels, so an internal staircase may be part of the route as well as the communal one. Plaster bonded straight onto concrete comes away with the bottom course of tiles, leaving a band behind the upstand. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Maisonette stairs here are external and often steep, so we cut to a length two people can carry safely up them rather than the longest possible piece.
Is access a problem in Alibon?
Estate roads with easy parking, but maisonette blocks mean an external stair or shared entrance and a first-floor carry with a turn at the top. A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. That is agreed before a plumber is booked.
Is Alibon mostly worktop replacement work for you?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop installation. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A plumber either side of us. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.
What decides the price of a worktop in Alibon?
Two runs meeting at an internal corner is the most common shape we fit, and the corner is where the decisions are. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. Found at template, not on fit day. Sort a parking bay or permit near the entrance, confirm the lift is in service and get us the door codes, and tell us about any asbestos survey on the flat before we start stripping out. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Units kept, surface changed.
