Steep streets plus stepped front paths make the approach the hardest part, and a slab that fits the kitchen may still not turn at the top of a Victorian staircase.

The ground falls steeply towards the Finchley Road and Cricklewood, so streets are on a gradient with stepped front entrances and no driveways, and permit parking is enforced. Converted flats mean a stair carry on most jobs. Weight tells on a staircase more than anywhere else, because there is nowhere to set a piece down mid-flight and no way to change your grip once it is moving. Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed.
