Cranham kitchens
The buildings and streets around Cranham
What reception counter work actually involves in Cranham depends on what you are fitting into, and around here that is not one thing. Later suburban stock on the eastern edge, mostly detached houses and bungalows built from the 1950s onwards, so kitchens are already reasonably sized square rooms and rarely need structural work. The common job is a full refit within the existing shape, new units, a U-run with a peninsula, and quartz that has to work with an existing tiled floor the client is keeping. Bring us the problem rather than the diagnosis. Working out what you have got is the first thing we do.
Small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run: short lengths, few joins, and a lot to work around. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. What the desk has to do decides what it is allowed to look like.
Ceiling heights dropped after the war, so there is less wall between the worktop and the wall units than in anything older. Terraces from this period sit behind small parades, and the counters there belong to pharmacies, minicab offices and takeaways rather than to lobbies. Housing office counters get cleaned harder than they get used.
What we are usually templating in is 1950s-1970s detached, post-war semi, bungalow and 1980s estate house. They fail in different places, which is why the survey looks at different things.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Cranham is its own job
Our survey in Cranham exists to answer how the stone gets to the room and what it has to be levelled against. Very easy: wide estate roads, individual drives, garages, turning space and no parking restrictions to speak of. Existing floors are usually staying here, so we protect them properly and check base-unit heights against the finished floor rather than the slab. It goes on the drawing, you agree the drawing, and the workshop cuts to that. Nothing is decided on the day.
The work
What reception counters involves
It is quoted the way a kitchen is, with the material supply-only and templating, fabrication and fitting each written on their own line rather than bundled into a rate for the frontage. Fitting is booked around the building rather than around our diary, which on a working reception usually means an evening or a weekend. You end up with a lower surface a seated visitor can genuinely use, at the height the accessibility standard sets rather than the height that suited the elevation.
A reception counter is two working surfaces at two heights joined by a return, and the lower one exists so somebody in a wheelchair can be served at it. The public front edge is profiled and polished on the same machine as a kitchen edge, then eased by hand where hands will land on it. A pharmacy counter on one of these parades is two heights before anyone draws it, with a consultation position and a dispensing side kept off the public. The lobby opens as normal the following morning.

The money
What it costs in Cranham
A counter is priced by its pieces rather than by its frontage, because the two heights, the return and the knee recess are separate operations before they are one desk. A U is three runs and two corners, so the join count and the edge metreage both rise faster than the floor area does. The stone is quoted at £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the labour is kept out of it deliberately, because a blended rate hides the lines you would otherwise question. The transaction shelf is its own line, because it is its own piece.

The carry, and what it rules out
A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. Where the van cannot wait, the counter, the shelf and the return all come off together and the packaging goes back out afterwards. A bay suspension is a line on the quote, not a surprise.

Cranham in the housing figures
Taken across Cranham and the roads either side of it, the great majority of what is standing is post-war, on planned estate layouts. That is why the material choice gets the argument. Older parades cap the piece at the shopfront, and newer lobbies cap it at the lift. The carcass as built is the only dimension that counts.

What Cranham asks for
The building stock on this patch tells us nothing useful about this service, because this service is not driven by it. It is driven by worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop replacement on the domestic side. The method does not change.

Getting stone into a Cranham kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Cranham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Which postcodes do you cover around Cranham?
Yes. Cranham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM14. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Havering. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Two heights, one unload, one trip across the pavement. You never have to visit anything or collect anything: we template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen.
Is there anything about Cranham buildings that catches reception counters out?
Post-war terraces have a short straight hall to the kitchen, which is a good deal kinder than the houses they replaced. The parades behind terraces of this period carry pharmacies, minicab offices, takeaways and small surgeries, and their counters are the hardest-used stone we fit. A converted house wants a counter that reads as furniture. A floor that falls across the depth of a run rather than along it tips the carcasses front to back, and packing the front feet changes the overhang while it fixes the level. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. A shadow gap solves what a scribe cannot.
What do you check about the route into a Cranham property?
A level threshold with hard standing outside it is the one arrangement where a full run goes in without a single re-grip. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Every re-grip near a finished front edge is planned out beforehand. A shared drive is only useful if the neighbour is not the one parked behind the van, so we ask which side the standing belongs to before the date is set. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. The van stays put while the carcass is being scribed to.
Would you call Cranham a reception counters area?
Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop replacement. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. On a fit-out counter the date is half the decision. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. Nothing is cut until the joinery has been signed off.
Why do two Cranham kitchens the same size price differently?
Three runs is three scribes and three separate lifts, so a U takes longer on site than its metreage suggests even on a day when nothing goes wrong. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. The public side and the staff side take different details. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted separately rather than rolled in.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Once the carcasses are levelled the gap under the plinth varies along the run, and that varying gap is the honest record of what the floor is doing. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The knee recess is checked for square before the shelf is cut. Tell us whether there is rear access off a service road, and send the carcass dimensions with the till, terminal and cable positions marked on them. Someone who expects to still be there in ten years asks different questions: how a honed finish marks, what a sealer does and does not do, and whether a chip by the sink can be repaired in place. Where a managing agent has to approve the work, the drawing goes out in a form they can sign without ever standing in the lobby. The building manager sets the hours the counter goes in.
What happens to the worktop that comes off?
If you want the old top kept for a garage or a utility, say so and it stays on site. An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Drives with a dropped kerb and a tight turn-in take a long van at an angle, and that angle decides which side the tail lift can work from. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. A red route puts a clock on a counter that will not be rushed.
Can I have grooves instead of a separate drainer in Cranham?
They are cut with a fall towards the bowl, which is why they cannot be added on site later. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. Blockwork with a hard render that has been patched over decades looks modern and behaves nothing like it. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. The lower shelf is there to be used, not to break up an elevation.
Can the price change after templating?
The quote is written from the template drawing. Before that it works from what you have described. What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. A wall line that runs level over a floor that does not means the finish closes up on the plinth at one end, which is joinery rather than something the stone can answer. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. Two levels means two datums, and they are reconciled on paper.
Will I have to look after it? What does a Cranham worktop need?
Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Bleach and limescale remover harm a polished finish rather than clean it, whichever material is on the units. Walls look modern and are not: block or breeze with a skim that has been patched over decades, so dry-laying and scribing still apply. A pharmacy counter is two heights before anyone draws it, with a consultation position at the low level and a dispensing side that never meets the public, and the apertures for a card reader and a till sit at the transaction shelf. Old shopfronts were never sized for a three-metre top.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
