Cranham kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Blockwork with a hard render that has been patched over decades looks modern and behaves nothing like it. Splashbacks come off the same slab run as the tops, which means the decision has to be made before fabrication starts. The wall decides, not the brochure.
The common job is a full refit within the existing shape, new units, a U-run with a peninsula, and quartz that has to work with an existing tiled floor the client is keeping. Later suburban stock on the eastern edge, mostly detached houses and bungalows built from the 1950s onwards, so kitchens are already reasonably sized square rooms and rarely need structural work. Existing floors are usually staying here, so we protect them properly and check base-unit heights against the finished floor rather than the slab. Very easy: wide estate roads, individual drives, garages, turning space and no parking restrictions to speak of.
Base units from the seventies and eighties are often only 500mm deep, so a 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors want checking against it. Patched plaster next to original render sits at different depths, and that step is exactly what an upstand covers. Cut from the same slab run as the tops.
The stock behind these kitchens runs to 1950s-1970s detached, post-war semi, bungalow and 1980s estate house. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.
Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
Depth changes between patched and original plaster along the same wall, which show up as a tapering gap behind a tall splashback.

The shape of the run
A U shape uses more linear metres than people expect, and the two returns rarely nest together, so a second slab is a genuine possibility. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop replacement do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Cranham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Cranham on your patch?
Yes. Cranham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM14. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Havering. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. One trip is always better than three. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop splashbacks & upstands in Cranham be any different from anywhere else?
Post-war terraces have a short straight hall to the kitchen, which is a good deal kinder than the houses they replaced. Post-war terraces are typically blockwork or early lightweight block with a hard render coat, and the kitchen has usually been reconfigured at least once, leaving patched areas of newer plaster next to original render that sit at different depths. Decided before fabrication starts. Existing floors are usually staying here, so we protect them properly and check base-unit heights against the finished floor rather than the slab.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Cranham?
Very easy: wide estate roads, individual drives, garages, turning space and no parking restrictions to speak of. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. Joint positions follow from that.
Do you get much worktop splashbacks & upstands work in Cranham?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop replacement. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Same batch, same run, same day.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
A U shape uses more linear metres than people expect, and the two returns rarely nest together, so a second slab is a genuine possibility. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Cranham?
Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. An upstand rides what a panel exposes. Boiler position, flue and any pipework drops must be settled and the wall skimmed level before templating the splashback run. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. The wall has to be ready.
