The housing stock
What we are usually working with in Cranham
Units are often only 500mm deep, so a standard 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors need checking against it. Carcasses that carried laminate for two decades are worth checking, and often bracing, before they carry stone. The old top comes off in pieces, not whole.
Very easy: wide estate roads, individual drives, garages, turning space and no parking restrictions to speak of. Existing floors are usually staying here, so we protect them properly and check base-unit heights against the finished floor rather than the slab.
These were built on a solid ground floor slab, so nothing bounces and nothing can be packed down, only up. A deeper top on shallow units overhangs at the front, so the doors and drawer fronts are checked before it is bedded. Old fixings come out of soft brick and better ones go in.
Locally the mix runs to 1950s-1970s detached, post-war semi, bungalow and 1980s estate house. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
There is nothing to visit in Cranham. Samples are posted free, the template is taken in your kitchen and the stone is fitted there too.
