Cudham kitchens
The buildings and streets around Cudham
If you are weighing up reception counter work in Cudham, the first thing worth knowing is that the building decides more than the brochure does. Rural houses and barn conversions where the kitchen is often the largest room in the building, with a big central island doubling as the dining table, an Aga or range recess and a boot room off the back door. Timber floors and exposed structure mean levels move. The tape measure decides it, not the description above, and not anything anybody says over the telephone.
Lime plaster on nine inch brick has been patched with gypsum wherever a radiator or a socket has moved, and the two finish at different depths. The lower transaction shelf sits at the height a person in a wheelchair can be served at, and that height is fixed on the drawing before anything else about the desk is. Where the join lands is a sightline question before it is a slab question.
Ceiling beams cross the room at a height that decides where a piece can be stood on edge and where it cannot. A school or nursery reception has to be a security point as well as a desk, so a screen or hatch belongs on the same drawing as the top. A stair off the pavement caps what can be turned onto the landing.
The kinds of building we work in here are farmhouse, barn conversion, rural cottage and detached on smallholding. The template reads them differently even where the layout looks identical.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Cudham is its own job
The reason we ask so much before quoting in Cudham is that a worktop cannot be trimmed to fit a surprise. Single-track lanes with steep banks, mud on the road and gates that need opening; some properties are up a farm track where the last two hundred metres are unmetalled. On barn conversions the timber frame moves seasonally, so we mechanically isolate the stone from the structure and never bond a run tight against a post. That is the sort of thing we come and look at in Cudham before we quote, not after you have committed.
The work
What reception counters involves
The lower serving surface is part of the same order rather than an extra, because a desk without one cannot serve a visitor who is seated. The route from the door to where the counter will stand is boarded and the finished floor covered before the first piece comes off the trolley. You end up with a lower surface a seated visitor can genuinely use, at the height the accessibility standard sets rather than the height that suited the elevation.
The apertures, for cable, for a card reader, for a screen stem, are machined at the works and cannot be added afterwards. Card reader positions are taken from the operator on site, because a payment terminal moves after an architect has drawn it. A school reception is a security point as well as a desk, so any screen or hatch is drawn on the same sheet as the counter. Dry-assembled on the bench before the van is loaded.

The money
What it costs in Cudham
What the joiner builds moves the figure as much as what we cut, because a carcass arriving square and level takes hours off the fitting day. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. Two quotes can agree on a supply rate of £110 to £550 per square metre and still land a long way apart, because the cut-outs, the joins and the edge profile are priced after it. The knee recess costs support, and the support is shown.

The building, and what it does to the job
Where two pieces meet over a fall in the floor the join has to be flush to the hand as well as true to the level, because the eye reads the join and forgives the room. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. Where the plaster bows, the counter is drawn away from it.

What Cudham asks for
A trade counter or a bar does not come out of the local housing stock, so there is no ranking to give you. The housing itself asks for worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop templating. The work is quoted the same way regardless.

Cudham in the housing figures
Across Cudham, the stock is mostly in the hands of the people living in it. Permission to work late and a booked goods lift sit with the building rather than with the person behind the desk. What the public leans on is specified for being leaned on.

Getting stone into a Cudham kitchen
Single-track lanes with steep banks, mud on the road and gates that need opening; some properties are up a farm track where the last two hundred metres are unmetalled.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Cudham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Cudham on your patch?
Yes. Cudham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are TN14. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bromley. With no scheme to work with there is nothing to book and nobody to ring, so the only levers left are an early arrival and a word with the neighbours. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The tail lift needs pavement, not simply a space. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Is there anything about Cudham buildings that catches reception counters out?
The floor is often flags or brick laid straight on the ground, so it is solid, uneven and not going to be levelled by chasing into it. Large houses in these streets get converted into clinics, nurseries, small offices and members' rooms, and the reception ends up in a hall that was never meant to hold a desk. Steel and brick leave a desk nothing to lean against. Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. A shadow gap solves what a scribe cannot.
What do you check about the route into a Cudham property?
The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Nothing is carried through a reception still taking visitors. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. Outside opening hours is usually when the kerb is free.
Is reception counters what Cudham is known for?
Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. A spare offcut kept back can save a whole counter later. Kitchens go in near the end of a conversion, behind the plastering and the flooring, by which point the programme has already absorbed whatever slipped earlier. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. Repeat receptions are worth settling once and then leaving alone.
Why do two Cudham kitchens the same size price differently?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. Shelf depth is set by the knee space underneath it. Stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the templating, the fabrication and the fitting each carry their own line.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The knee recess is checked for square before the shelf is cut. Confirm the edge profile and which faces receive it, and tell us whether a screen, hatch or gate forms part of the counter before the carcass is built. Because the money comes out of a household rather than a maintenance budget, phasing is common: tops now, island or splashbacks later, quoted so the second visit still matches the first. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. The building manager sets the hours the counter goes in.
Is templating a separate visit from fitting?
The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. There is usually a cellar head or a hatch somewhere in the floor, and whatever sits above it has to stay liftable. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. The transaction shelf carries the detail the upper counter hides.
What happens to the worktop that comes off?
On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. Whoever holds the lease usually holds the loading bay.
How many joins will a Cudham kitchen need?
Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. A join sits over a cabinet gable. It never spans a gap and never runs through a cut-out. An island carries its own edge detail all the way round, so a mitred 100mm apron on four sides is four mitres cut, bonded and polished before the piece ever leaves the bench. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. The longest piece is decided before the shape is finalised.
Will you fit a worktop I have bought myself?
The workmanship guarantee is the same either way. It does not extend to a material we did not supply. If your own slab breaks there is no matching replacement to hand, and that is the real difference. How the slab has been stored is worth telling us, because stone kept flat is not stone off a rack. Studio and one-bed conversions put the whole kitchen against a single wall, so the job is one run and everything depends on that one length. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. On a fit-out counter the date is half the decision.

We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.
