Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. Doorways are low and narrow, which is a genuine constraint on piece length before anything else is considered. Islands here regularly run longer than a slab, so the join is nested to sit over an internal gable and positioned so it does not run through the hob cut-out, and on a heavily veined stone we nest the island and the back run together so the movement relates across the room. Settled on the drawing, cut once. On barn conversions the timber frame moves seasonally, so we mechanically isolate the stone from the structure and never bond a run tight against a post.

Single-track lanes with steep banks, mud on the road and gates that need opening; some properties are up a farm track where the last two hundred metres are unmetalled. Rear access usually lets us fit longer pieces whole, so the join count ends up decided by the slab rather than by the building. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Proven on the bench before dispatch.

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The range or Aga, the sink and the tap all need to be confirmed by model before nesting, because their clearances and hole positions set where the island can be cut. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. Changing an appliance after the nest is set means recutting the piece, not adjusting it. The approved drawing is the instruction.
