Downham kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. Units fitted, fixed and level first.
The standard kitchen is a small rear room about 2m by 2.7m and the usual upgrade is knocking through to the dining room for a 3.2m L with a breakfast bar.
One of the large interwar municipal estates, built to repeating semi and terrace plans.
The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. The sill height over the sink is settled on site, because there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn.
What turns up on the job sheets is 1920s-30s LCC cottage estate, postwar infill and 1960s maisonette block. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Very easy: wide roads, grass verges, dropped kerbs and driveways or hardstandings on most properties, with room to park a long van directly outside.

The building, and what it does to the job
The same 3.2m L comes up constantly here, but check for the original chimney breast, it's often still there behind the plaster.
Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Plotted, not estimated.
The sill or window board height over the sink run - there is often less clearance than the height of an upstand between the unit top and the sill, and that only gets settled with the template on site.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

True everywhere, stated once
A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop templating in Downham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Downham on your patch?
Yes. Downham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR1, SE6. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Lewisham. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop templating in Downham be any different from anywhere else?
The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. The sill height over the sink is settled on site, because there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. The same 3.2m L comes up constantly here, but check for the original chimney breast, it's often still there behind the plaster.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Downham?
Very easy: wide roads, grass verges, dropped kerbs and driveways or hardstandings on most properties, with room to park a long van directly outside. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. That is part of what the visit is for.
Is worktop templating common in Downham?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Appliances on site, not on order.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. Real angles, not plan angles. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Downham?
Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Plotted, not estimated. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
