East Sheen kitchens

The buildings and streets around East Sheen

Edwardian double-fronted house1930s semi1930s detachedpostwar flats

The single biggest variable in what stone table top work costs in East Sheen is not the material you pick but the room you are asking it to fit. Large Edwardian and interwar family houses where full-width rear extensions are the norm - a 4m run on the flank, a 2.4m island with a hob and downdraft or a ceiling extract, a boot room off the side return and a utility with its own shorter top. Tell us which street you are on in East Sheen and what the old worktop is, and we can usually narrow it down before we visit.

The window over the sink sits at about worktop height, so the run is set out around the sill and the reveal rather than under them. Round and oval tops are cut on the machine from a drawn curve, which is the only way the shape stays true the whole way round. The bases stay yours and only the surface changes.

These were built with a separate dining room, and most have had the wall between it and the kitchen taken out with a steel put in above. The units are wider than an older shopfront, which is what makes a long wall of two-seaters work, and a repeated size is the single cheapest decision on the order because it nests tightly and makes a spare piece worth holding. A loading bay is the easiest delivery there is.

What the research records here is Edwardian double-fronted house, 1930s semi, 1930s detached and postwar flats. The floor datum is the thing that changes most between them.

True everywhere

Restaurant and cafe table tops, in short

  • Every edge is profiled and polished, because every edge is visible and touchable.
  • Fixing centres are drilled to the base plate you already have, so bring us one or its drawing.
  • Thicker stone or a mitred edge reads as a heavier table without adding much weight to lift.
  • Round and oval tops are cut on the CNC, not by hand, so the curve is true all the way round.

The place

Why East Sheen is its own job

Before we quote a length in East Sheen we want to know how the stone gets in and what it will be sitting against. Wide roads with front driveways and dropped kerbs at most houses, though the Upper Richmond Road side is a heavy through route; side passages are generally wide enough to bring stone round to a rear door. Rear glazing on three sides means low sun straight down the run, so a honed or textured finish is worth pushing over a polished black. You see the drawing before we cut, and if we have read the room wrong, that is the moment to say so, not the morning the fitters arrive.

The work

What restaurant table tops involves

Spare tops are worth ordering with the set. A matching replacement is straightforward while the slab run is still in stock and a lottery once it is not. Sizes come off your seating plan and the gangways you have to keep, so the table dimensions are agreed before any slab is committed to the order. You end up with a room of tables that match each other, because the tops came off one slab run instead of being ordered piecemeal over a year.

Round and oval tops are machine cut from a drawing, which is the only way a curve stays true right the way round. The base plate is measured for its bolt pattern and for its overall spread, because one sets the drilling and the other sets the biggest top it will safely hold. A back yard delivery lets the whole order arrive at once, so the pieces are checked off against the seating plan before any base is unwrapped. Finished on every edge, because every edge is seen.

The money

What it costs in East Sheen

A table order is priced per top and the count matters more than the area, because each piece carries its own perimeter of finished edge and its own drilling. Overhangs, a waterfall end and seating all add machining, and an island is where those decisions cluster. If you are holding two quotes, the £110 to £550 supply rate is the part they will agree on. Compare the join count, the edge profile and what the fitting line covers. Priced by the top, and the count is on the quote.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

What East Sheen asks for

This one sits outside the domestic mix entirely. That mix, locally, is worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop templating. Commercial pieces are drawn, cut and fitted exactly as a kitchen would be.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The carry, and what it rules out

A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. What gets damaged on a route like that is a corner, and a table corner is polished, exposed and at precisely the height of a door frame. Corners take the knocks, so corners get the padding.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

East Sheen in the housing figures

On these streets very little is recent build, so nearly every job is a replacement into units that are already there. A whole floor is specified at once, so the material gets committed in a single purchase rather than topped up afterwards. Covers are counted, and the count is honest.

Access

Getting stone into an East Sheen kitchen

Wide roads with front driveways and dropped kerbs at most houses, though the Upper Richmond Road side is a heavy through route; side passages are generally wide enough to bring stone round to a rear door.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in East Sheen

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover East Sheen?

Yes. East Sheen is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW14. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames. A dropped kerb wide enough for a car is not always wide enough for a long-wheelbase van, and the width of the crossing decides the rest. A table order comes off the van as a stack of frames and a pallet of bases, and both of those need somewhere to stand before either is moved. The van stays until the last piece is on its base. There is nothing to drive to and nothing to pick up, because both visits are to the property itself.

What should I expect from restaurant table tops in an East Sheen kitchen?

A side return glazed over gives the room a second aspect and a second floor level, because the old external threshold is still under the finish. Parades of this period usually keep a service road or a yard behind them, so a full order can arrive at the back and the dining room stays laid up while it does. The room is handed back laid up, whatever the building. A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. None of that is scribed against on a table, since it stands clear of every wall, so the awkwardness moves from the back edge to the floor and the base. Every piece is offered up to its own pedestal.

How would you get a worktop into a property in East Sheen?

The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. A table order is many small pieces rather than one long one, so the route decides how many trips the delivery takes rather than how big anything can be. Pieces come off the van in the order the room fills. Where a car has to come off the drive first, it is worth knowing whose car it is and whether the keys are in the house on the morning. Where the standing is short the pieces are counted off at the tail lift against the plan rather than checked once they are already inside. A quiet hour is worth more to us than a close bay.

Would you call East Sheen a restaurant table tops area?

Honestly, no, though it would be easy to claim otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop templating. That says something about the housing round here, not about the work. Quote, cut and fit are the same here as on any other part of the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Table work arrives as a batch by its nature, and a batch means one slab run rather than the same colour ordered twice a year apart. Orders are counted in pieces and never in metres. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. A room opening in a second phase is worth naming now, while the material is still on the ground and a match is a telephone call. Ordered as a set, so the set matches.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. A table top answers to none of that, since it meets no wall and needs no scribe, but the pieces come off the same slab as the counter and the colour has to carry across both. One repeated size cuts better than six one-offs. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.

What state does an East Sheen kitchen have to be in before you template?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. A column, a boxed duct or a fixed bench in a dining room is designed around with a shape cut to suit rather than notched on site. Nothing is trimmed on site to make it fit. Confirm how many covers go outside, and tell us whether the outdoor bases share the pattern of the indoor ones, since they often do not. Where two people share the decision it helps to know early which of them is settling the edge profile and which is settling the budget, because it is rarely the same person for both. A table top bolted to a base you already own is loose furniture rather than a fixture, so it leaves with the operator at the end of a term. The drawing goes to whoever has to approve it.

Do you take on fitting-only work in East Sheen?

If your own slab breaks there is no matching replacement to hand, and that is the real difference. Supply through us runs £110 to £550 per square metre for the slab alone, which is the line you would be removing. Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where an operator changes hands the bases usually stay, so a refit becomes a resurface and the saving comes from what is already bolted down. A second room is easier to match if it is mentioned now.

What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?

A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. Rounds waste the corners of their blank where squares do not, so the mix of shapes moves the slab count more than the number of covers does. Cut from the same run as the counter, so the room agrees.

Does a stone worktop need sealing?

A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. Ceilings are lower here than in the terraces of fifty years earlier, so wall units and a full-height panel compete for the same band of wall. Parades of this period usually keep a service yard behind them, so tops and bases arrive at the back and the dining room stays laid up while they do. A goods lift takes a frame and saves a morning.

What if something breaks during the fit?

A remade piece is cut from the same slab run wherever the slab allows, because a replacement from another batch will not match across a join. The rest of the kitchen still goes in. One damaged piece does not hold up the pieces either side. The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. Rear access usually lets us fit longer pieces whole, so the join count ends up decided by the slab rather than by the building. Tops travel upright in a padded frame, and it is the frame rather than the person carrying it that has to clear the tightest turn. A trolley run across a forecourt gets boarded like any other.

Kareem did the countertops dur8ng my kitchen remodel, and I was so impressed that I had him back to do the laundry room as well, which tells you everything you need to know. He is an absolute gem. Shows up when he says he will (which, let’s be honest, is rarer than it should be), does beautifully work, and clearly takes real pride in what he does. The countertops look fantastic, and he even went above and beyond, using leftover quartz to create an extra counter in my bathroom. Genius. He’s kind, professional, reasonably priced, and just gets on with it. No fuss, no drama, just a job very well done. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and will absolutely be using him again if the need arises. Happy to answer any questions.
