East Sheen kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. All of that is settled at the nesting stage, because a machined piece cannot be adjusted afterwards. Joins over gables, always.
Large Edwardian and interwar family houses where full-width rear extensions are the norm - a 4m run on the flank, a 2.4m island with a hob and downdraft or a ceiling extract, a boot room off the side return and a utility with its own shorter top.
Rear glazing on three sides means low sun straight down the run, so a honed or textured finish is worth pushing over a polished black.
A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. Most of these have a side passage and a back door, so a full-length piece can usually reach the kitchen without being cut down, and the piece sizing is driven by the slab rather than the route. The bench proves it before the van moves.
What turns up on the job sheets is Edwardian double-fronted house, 1930s semi, 1930s detached and postwar flats. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop fabrication, in short
- Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
- Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
- A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
- Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Getting stone into the room
Wide roads with front driveways and dropped kerbs at most houses, though the Upper Richmond Road side is a heavy through route; side passages are generally wide enough to bring stone round to a rear door.
A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. That is the last thing settled before dispatch.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop templating do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Worktop fabrication in East Sheen
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is East Sheen on your patch?
Yes. East Sheen is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW14. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop fabrication in East Sheen be any different from anywhere else?
A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. What does drive the bench work is the knocked-through kitchen-diner: the return worktop and any peninsula are seen end-on from the dining side, so we nest the pieces so the veining carries across the internal corner in the same direction rather than turning through ninety degrees. Settled on the drawing, cut once. Rear glazing on three sides means low sun straight down the run, so a honed or textured finish is worth pushing over a polished black.
How would you get a worktop into a property in East Sheen?
Wide roads with front driveways and dropped kerbs at most houses, though the Upper Richmond Road side is a heavy through route; side passages are generally wide enough to bring stone round to a rear door. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.
Is East Sheen really a worktop fabrication area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Proven on the bench before dispatch.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to East Sheen?
Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
