Fish Island kitchens

The buildings and streets around Fish Island

converted industrial unitlive-work warehouse2015 onwards riverside apartment block

If stone table top work in Fish Island is on your list this year, the useful starting point is not the colour but the shape of the room. Warehouse and live-work units have the kitchen as a free-standing block in an otherwise open shell, so it is long straight runs with an exposed island and full-height end panels rather than anything fitted into a corner. The newer blocks along the navigation have compact single-wall kitchens in an open-plan living room. Plenty of kitchens do not match either description exactly, which is what the measured survey is there to sort out.

Services coming up through a floor slab mean the island cannot move to suit the stone, so the stone is cut to suit the island. What a table top needs from us is a size, a shape and the base plate it has to be drilled to, and very little else. The seating plan sets the sizes before the slab does.

Original brickwork is uneven by ten millimetres or more across a bay, so the back edge is scribed to the actual face rather than to a line. Concrete and old timber floors run out of level over a long span, and a row of tables shows that up more clearly than any worktop would. Deliveries follow the premises rather than the postcode.

What the job sheets keep listing is converted industrial unit, live-work warehouse and 2015 onwards riverside apartment block. The template reads them differently even where the layout looks identical.

True everywhere

Restaurant and cafe table tops, in short

  • Every edge is profiled and polished, because every edge is visible and touchable.
  • Fixing centres are drilled to the base plate you already have, so bring us one or its drawing.
  • Thicker stone or a mitred edge reads as a heavier table without adding much weight to lift.
  • Round and oval tops are cut on the CNC, not by hand, so the curve is true all the way round.

The place

Why Fish Island is its own job

A firm that has not worked in Fish Island tends to find out about the access on the morning of the fit, which is too late to change anything. Access is off narrow industrial roads with working yards and gates that get locked outside hours, so a delivery slot has to be agreed with the building manager. Older converted units often have a wide roller shutter at ground level, which is the easiest slab entry anywhere in the borough, but the upper live-work floors are reached by an open industrial stair. Ceilings are high and the units are open, so islands are exposed on all four sides and every edge and mitre is visible from across the room. Once the template is signed off the price is fixed. It does not move because the job turned out fiddly.

The work

What restaurant table tops involves

Square, rectangular, round and oval tops are all cut here, the curved ones on the CNC from a drawing rather than dressed by hand off a scribed line. We start from the bases. Bring one in, or send the maker’s drawing with the plate size and the bolt centres, and the drilling is set from that rather than guessed at. You keep the bases you have already paid for and change only what stands on them, which is the cheapest way to make a tired dining room read as refitted.

Round and oval tops are machine cut from a drawing, which is the only way a curve stays true right the way round. Threaded sockets are resin-anchored into those holes, which gives the bolt something to pull against other than bare stone. Where the floor falls across a long room, the feet are wound out table by table and the difference is taken up there. The base is measured before the stone is cut.

The money

What it costs in Fish Island

The edge is a real line on the quote: a table is profiled and polished right round its perimeter, where a worktop is finished on one long side. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. Multiplying your worktop area by something between £110 and £550 gives you a material bill rather than a job cost, and the two are far enough apart to be worth keeping separate. Priced by the top, and the count is on the quote.

warehouse and wharf conversions

What Fish Island asks for

A trade counter or a bar does not come out of the local housing stock, so there is no ranking to give you. The housing itself asks for worktop fabrication, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation. The work is quoted the same way regardless.

warehouse and wharf conversions

Fish Island in the housing figures

In the streets around Fish Island, converted and purpose-built flats make up most of the stock. A short run leaves nowhere to hide a join. Frames travel upright, and a frame needs the same clearance at a turn that the person walking it through does. What a dining floor holds is measured, not hoped for.

warehouse and wharf conversions

The carry, and what it rules out

Suction lifters earn their keep on a straight flight and become a liability on a winder, where a handle standing out from the face is one more thing to catch on a wall. The bases go in first and are stood where they belong, so nothing heavy is dragged across a floor that has already been finished. Bases go in first and tops go in last.

Access

Getting stone into a Fish Island kitchen

Access is off narrow industrial roads with working yards and gates that get locked outside hours, so a delivery slot has to be agreed with the building manager. Older converted units often have a wide roller shutter at ground level, which is the easiest slab entry anywhere in the borough, but the upper live-work floors are reached by an open industrial stair.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Fish Island

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Fish Island far enough out to be a problem for you?

Yes. Fish Island is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E3. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. A table order comes off the van as a stack of frames and a pallet of bases, and both of those need somewhere to stand before either is moved. The pavement stays walkable while the frames come off. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about restaurant table tops in Fish Island?

Steel columns and downstands land where the frame put them, which is frequently in the middle of what would otherwise be a clean run. These units are large and open, which is where the long communal table shows up, and a piece longer than a slab is a decision rather than a detail: either two tops meeting over a central leg, or a single piece in a material that comes in a longer sheet. A shell unit is drawn before it is measured. An intruding steel column, a brick pier or a downstand breaks a run that would otherwise have been one clean piece. A column, a boxed duct or a fixed bench in a dining room is designed around with a shape cut to suit rather than notched on site. The base carries the weight and the floor carries the base.

Is access a problem in Fish Island?

Timber nosings chip under a slipped edge, so the treads are covered along the whole flight rather than only at the landings. A table order is many small pieces rather than one long one, so the route decides how many trips the delivery takes rather than how big anything can be. Nothing is stacked flat on a dining room floor. Unrestricted does not mean empty, and a street that is clear at seven is usually full by nine. The bases are the heavy half of the delivery, so the pallet is dealt with first while there are still hands free for it. One stop, and the count is proved before we leave.

Do you get much restaurant table tops work in Fish Island?

Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop fabrication, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Table work arrives as a batch by its nature, and a batch means one slab run rather than the same colour ordered twice a year apart. A second room is easier to match if it is mentioned now. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. A room opening in a second phase is worth naming now, while the material is still on the ground and a match is a telephone call. Spares are cheap while the run is still on the ground.

What makes one Fish Island kitchen dearer than the next?

Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A table top answers to none of that, since it meets no wall and needs no scribe, but the pieces come off the same slab as the counter and the colour has to carry across both. Cut from the same run as the counter, so the room agrees. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What holds a template up more often than anything else?

Where a column lands in the run the template plots its actual outline so the stone is cut to fit around it rather than stopped short and filled. Where a floor falls away, the levelling is done by winding out the feet under each base rather than by packing anything under the stone. A shallow room decides the diameter early. Give us the communal table length and the base positions along it, and confirm the goods lift dimensions so the frames can be sized to the car. The person choosing the surface is not the person who will cook on it, which argues for a finish that absorbs ordinary wear rather than one that rewards careful housekeeping. A table top bolted to a base you already own is loose furniture rather than a fixture, so it leaves with the operator at the end of a term. What moves out with you is worth choosing well.

Can the price change after templating?

What moves the figure after templating is a change you make: a different edge, an extra cut-out, a bigger sink chosen late. Nothing is payable until the template, and the template measures the room as it stands rather than estimating from a plan. Exposed structure means the back edge is not a straight line at all, and a scribe of fifteen or twenty millimetres across a run is normal. Fixed seating sets the dimension it faces, so a piece against a bench is drawn to the bench instead of to a standard size. Sharp corners are eased wherever people pass.

Will I have to look after it? What does a Fish Island worktop need?

Where a top takes wine, oil and lemon most days, the non-porous materials ask least of the household. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. The goods lift is generous and the flat entrance often is not, so the tightest point on the route is inside the flat rather than in the building. The delivery is straightforward by comparison, since a goods lift and a loading door will take a full frame and a whole floor can be staged in one movement. Flats above set the hours the work can happen in.

What happens if a piece will not go up the stairs?

The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. What decides it is not the width of the stairwell but the length of piece that can be turned in it. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. A steep pitch shortens the tread and lengthens the reach, which leaves whoever is below carrying most of the weight for the full flight. Tops travel upright in a padded frame, and it is the frame rather than the person carrying it that has to clear the tightest turn. The turn is measured for the frame, not for a person.

What if a piece cracks while it is being carried in?

A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. Every piece is dry-assembled on the bench before it is loaded, so a fabrication mistake is found in the workshop rather than in your kitchen. The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. Where the stairwell is narrow enough that the stone travels on edge the polished face runs within an inch of the plaster, so the walls get boarded as well as the steps. What gets damaged on a route like that is a corner, and a table corner is polished, exposed and at precisely the height of a door frame. Wrapping stays on until the pedestal is standing.

We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.
