Stone bar tops in Fish Island

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Before you settle on a material, it is worth understanding how stone bar top work in Fish Island is shaped by the room it has to go into. Warehouse and live-work units have the kitchen as a free-standing block in an otherwise open shell, so it is long straight runs with an exposed island and full-height end panels rather than anything fitted into a corner. The newer blocks along the navigation have compact single-wall kitchens in an open-plan living room. If your kitchen is a bit of both, that is common enough and it changes nothing about how we go about it.

The original openings were sized for goods, but the residential doors dropped into them were not. What carries a bar top here is rarely a kitchen carcass, so the framing underneath gets looked at before anything is measured across the top of it. A bar top is a structural piece with a polished face on it.

Original brickwork is uneven by ten millimetres or more across a bay, so the back edge is scribed to the actual face rather than to a line. This is the stock where a bar is most often a working one, with a glasswasher, a drip tray and beer lines under it rather than a place to put a laptop. Scribed at the back and free at the front.

What the surveys keep coming back to is converted industrial unit, live-work warehouse and 2015 onwards riverside apartment block. The run length that is easy in one is a join in another.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Fish Island is its own job

Anyone can cut a worktop to size, and what decides the day in Fish Island is whether the rest of it was thought through. Access is off narrow industrial roads with working yards and gates that get locked outside hours, so a delivery slot has to be agreed with the building manager. Older converted units often have a wide roller shutter at ground level, which is the easiest slab entry anywhere in the borough, but the upper live-work floors are reached by an open industrial stair. Ceilings are high and the units are open, so islands are exposed on all four sides and every edge and mitre is visible from across the room. Once the template is signed off the price is fixed. It does not move because the job turned out fiddly.

The work

What bar tops involves

It suits a home bar in a converted cellar or a lounge, a breakfast counter on the end of a run, and a working trade bar with a sink and a drip tray underneath. The top is machined at the works with the front edge, the ends and the underside all profiled and polished, since every one of those faces is at eye level from a stool. You end up with a surface chosen for what gets put down on it, so a wet glass standing all evening and a slice of lemon are not the things that spoil it.

Fitting a bar runs in three stages. The frame is checked and packed level, the support for the projection goes in, and only then does any stone come off the van. The top is levelled along its own length and packed off the frame, since a floor in an older building will not give a straight line to work from. Raw brick and steel give nothing to scribe against, so the counter is freestanding and every face of it is finished. Every face somebody can see is finished.

The money

What it costs in Fish Island

Material choice moves the figure less than the detail does, and on a bar the detail means the apron, the radius and whatever sits under the front edge. Overhangs, a waterfall end and seating all add machining, and an island is where those decisions cluster. Colour and finish account for most of the distance between £110 and £550 per square metre. Everything decided after that is labour, and labour is quoted by the operation. Frame, support and top, each priced as itself.

warehouse and wharf conversions

The carry, and what it rules out

Open-tread and cantilevered stairs give nothing to lean a piece against, so the whole weight stays on the crew for the full length of the flight. Where the bar is going into a cellar the pieces travel downward rather than up, and carrying stone down a flight gives a crew less control over it, not more. Piece length is capped by the turn, then the support is drawn to suit.

warehouse and wharf conversions

What Fish Island asks for

Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop fabrication, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.

warehouse and wharf conversions

Fish Island in the housing figures

Across this patch the great majority of homes sit in blocks rather than on their own plot. The kitchens are compact, so the fixed lines outweigh the stone. Where the way in is tight the piece is split into a front tier and a rear tier, which is a better answer than forcing a single length round a turn. Steel where the projection runs past what a carcass will hold.

Access

Getting stone into a Fish Island kitchen

Access is off narrow industrial roads with working yards and gates that get locked outside hours, so a delivery slot has to be agreed with the building manager. Older converted units often have a wide roller shutter at ground level, which is the easiest slab entry anywhere in the borough, but the upper live-work floors are reached by an open industrial stair.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Fish Island

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Fish Island?

Yes. Fish Island is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E3. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. Nothing is rushed off a tail lift onto an unsupported nose. Template and fit both happen at the property, so there is nothing to drive to and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Fish Island change how bar tops works?

Steel columns and downstands land where the frame put them, which is frequently in the middle of what would otherwise be a clean run. This is the stock where a bar is most often a working one, with a glasswasher, a waste, a drip tray and beer lines all needing to be planned under the top before the piece is drawn. The frame is built to the room and the stone answers to the frame. A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how far the stone has to be relieved changes which part of the slab the piece is cut from. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. Noggins go into a stud wall before a bar is fixed to it.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Fish Island?

A handrail that has to come off before a piece will pass is twenty minutes at the start of the day, and it goes back on the wall before we leave. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Two people to a bar top, four where the nose is deep. Unrestricted does not mean empty, and a street that is clear at seven is usually full by nine. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Two trips to the van, one for hardware and one for stone.

Is bar tops what Fish Island is known for?

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop fabrication, worktop installation and worktop design & quotation. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. Nothing is assumed about a frame somebody else built. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. The overhang is checked against the frame that exists.

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

An island carries its own edge detail all the way round, so a mitred 100mm apron on four sides is four mitres cut, bonded and polished before the piece ever leaves the bench. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A foot rail is planned with the frame, not bolted on later. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Fish Island?

A downstand over a run caps wall unit height before it caps anything else, and the splashback then takes its height from the steel rather than from the units. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. A sloping floor is a problem for the stools, not the top. Send the bar layout with the glasswasher, sink and waste positions marked, and tell us the route from where a van can stand to the room. A let property is specified for durability and for a fixed window, and both of those are legitimate reasons to choose differently. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. A bar in constant hands wants a finish that does not mark.

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. Waterfall ends are cut in sequence off the length either side of the top so the vein carries down the leg, and that sequence is gone the moment a piece has to be recut. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. What the shape gives in length it takes back in support.

What happens between the template and the fitting day?

Nothing is payable in advance of the template. If the units run late the template moves, not the fit: the gap between them is fabrication. The design and quotation visit comes first. It is free and carries no obligation. Painted brick is flat nowhere, and raked-back mortar joints leave a line no straightedge agrees with. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. People push against the front edge, so the front edge gets the steel.

Which materials need sealing and which do not?

A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. The goods lift is generous and the flat entrance often is not, so the tightest point on the route is inside the flat rather than in the building. That changes the order of the job: the services are set out first, the frame is built round them, and the stone is machined to suit what is already there. A cellar bar is set to the headroom first.

What is actually on a Fish Island worktop quote?

The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. The design and quotation visit is free and carries no obligation, so a figure exists before any commitment. Taking the old tops away is a line rather than an assumption, so it comes off if you do not want it. Encased steel is always bigger than the steel inside it, so the casing is what gets plotted, and a casing is rarely square to the wall it sits against. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. What the bar wraps around is templated, never assumed square.
