Stone bar tops in Bow
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Bow kitchens
The buildings and streets around Bow
The questions that decide stone bar top work in Bow are dull ones about doorways, corners and what the floor is doing, and they are asked early for good reason. Two very different jobs sit side by side: the big early-Victorian houses around the squares take a proper kitchen-diner with an island of 2.4m to 3m, while the standard bylaw terraces off the market end are galley kitchens in a narrow back addition. Converted factory flats have open-plan kitchens along one wall with a breakfast bar facing the living space. Tell us which street you are on in Bow and what the old worktop is, and we can usually narrow it down before we visit.
Chimney breasts and the alcoves either side of them break the run into short pieces before anyone has drawn a kitchen. Every face of a bar is on show from a stool, so the front edge and the underside of the nose are profiled and polished rather than left as the saw finished them. People push against the front edge, so the front edge gets the steel.
The chimney breast has almost always been taken out of the kitchen with the stack left standing above it, so that bay of wall is newer plasterwork on a different plane. A bar in a house of this age is usually either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the cellar is the harder of the two because the headroom fixes the counter height before anybody else gets a say. The frame is built to the room and the stone answers to the frame.
What the surveys keep coming back to is Georgian and early Victorian square terrace, Victorian bylaw terrace, 1980s-90s factory conversion and 2010s apartment block. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Bow is its own job
We treat a kitchen in Bow as its own job, because that is what the survey keeps showing us it is. The market days on the main shopping street close the loading options completely, and side streets have permit bays with dispensation needed from the borough. Factory conversions have wide industrial stair cores and a goods lift, which is the easiest access in the area, but the flats themselves have long internal corridors with tight turns at the kitchen door. The converted mill flats have genuinely long uninterrupted runs, so you are into slab-yield planning and matched joints rather than the usual terrace offcut job. It goes on the drawing, you agree the drawing, and the workshop cuts to that. Nothing is decided on the day.
The work
What bar tops involves
A stone bar top covers the surface and what carries it: the top itself, the edge profile on every face that shows, and the steel or corbels holding the projection up. The top is machined at the works with the front edge, the ends and the underside all profiled and polished, since every one of those faces is at eye level from a stool. You end up with a front edge that takes people leaning on it all evening without the top shifting, because the load was worked out before the stone was ordered.
Bar work is joinery with a stone surface on it, and the joinery is the half that decides whether the surface behaves itself. A bar sink, a drip tray or a socket through the surface is machined at the works with radiused internal corners, exactly as a kitchen cut-out would be. In a house of this age the bar generally stands in a through-lounge or a cellar, and neither floor is flat enough to set a frame down on without packing it. Every face somebody can see is finished.

The money
What it costs in Bow
The finished edge is where the money goes on a bar, since the front, the ends and the underside are all polished where a kitchen run would only ever show one face. In a galley the runs are short and the cut-outs are close together, so the fixed operations carry more of the total than the stone does. The spread from £110 to £550 per square metre is the width of the catalogue rather than vagueness about price, and where you land in it is a decision about material. You see what the projection costs before agreeing to it.

The carry, and what it rules out
A car will often hold more than its doors will admit, and it is the clear width between the door edges that a piece actually has to pass through. A top with a bonded apron on the front arrives deeper than a worktop and behaves like a beam, so there is no easing it round a turn at all. Cellar bars go down a flight, which is the harder direction.

What Bow asks for
Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.

Bow in the housing figures
Taken across Bow and the roads either side of it, most homes are rented rather than owned. A bar is a fixture, so who signs off the steel under the nose is settled before the frame is boarded up. A seat never sits above a seam.

Getting stone into a Bow kitchen
The market days on the main shopping street close the loading options completely, and side streets have permit bays with dispensation needed from the borough. Factory conversions have wide industrial stair cores and a goods lift, which is the easiest access in the area, but the flats themselves have long internal corridors with tight turns at the kitchen door.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Bow
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Which postcodes do you cover around Bow?
Yes. Bow is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E3. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. A van waiting on a loading concession has somebody standing with it, because a vehicle left unattended is the one that collects the ticket. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The bar top waits on the van until the frame is level. Template and fit both happen at the property, so there is nothing to drive to and nothing to collect.
What do the kitchens in Bow do to bar tops?
Ceilings are high in these, so wall unit heights and splashback heights are open choices rather than things the room has already decided. A bar in one of these houses is either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the two behave differently. A cellar bar is set to the headroom first. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The support plan is drawn at the same time as the cut-out.
Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Bow kitchens?
Once a long piece is in on the diagonal there is no room left for anyone else, so it travels up alone and is met on the landing above. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Front tier and back tier are carried and set as two pieces. Controlled hours that end in the middle of the afternoon make the second half of the day easy and put the whole problem in the first half. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. A licensed room sets the hours and the parking has to agree.
Would you call Bow a bar tops area?
Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. The steel is priced with the bar, not after it. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. Drinks left standing decide the material more than looks do.
What decides the price of a worktop in Bow?
The two runs are rarely the same length, and the shorter one often carries the sink, which puts the cut-outs in the piece with the least material to spare. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. The bar is set out from the seat and worked back to the units. Material runs £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting each get their own line.
What do I need to sort out first?
A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A bar top will not correct a frame that is out of true. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. Whoever manages the block controls the lift booking, the bin store and the visitor parking, and none of that sits in the gift of the household whose kitchen it is. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Seating height is set to a person or to a standard, and stated.
Can a damaged worktop be repaired in place?
The rest of the kitchen still goes in. One damaged piece does not hold up the pieces either side. A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. A remade piece is cut from the same slab run wherever the slab allows, because a replacement from another batch will not match across a join. Pieces get staged in the ground floor lobby and sent up singly, which needs somewhere to stand them where nobody will walk into them. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Where the route is tight the bar gains a join behind a corbel.
Do the template and the fit happen on the same visit?
Nothing is measured until the sink, the tap and the hob are in the room to measure against. A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. The original front door is narrow and the hall is often the only way in, which puts a ceiling on the longest single piece. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. Stool height and knee room are settled on the drawing.
What do drainer grooves add to the job?
They read strongly across a dark stone and are nearly invisible on a pale one, so look before deciding. Grooves and an undermounted bowl are usually specified together, since the grooves are run to the bowl edge. The grooves sit inside the depth of the top with stone left either side, so a shallow run limits them. There is usually a step down into the back addition, so the kitchen floor and the hall floor are not the same level and neither of them is flat. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. The overhang decides the bar, and the bar decides the stone.
How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?
A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Where the hob lands is set out against the units and the wall behind, not off the kitchen plan. We seat and seal the sink and hob on the day; water, waste, gas and electrics are for your plumber and electrician. A tall bank of housings at one end takes a chunk out of the working run, so the usable length of that side is always less than the length of the wall behind it. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. A foot rail is planned with the frame, not bolted on later.
