Have the boxing in its final finished form before the template, along with the fixed unit, the basin and the tap. Managed stock usually comes with its own rules about working hours, waste, and who is allowed on site. Who is paying decides the material here more than anywhere else, because a vanity is small enough that an expensive stone stops being an expensive decision. Units have to be fitted, fixed and level before templating, and it is better to hear that at the template than on the fitting day. Variation past what packing can take up has to be corrected in the carcasses before we cut, because the template records the units as they stand. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. The boxed soil stack in the corner is the usual version of it upstairs, and a top that notches round one loses depth exactly where the basin wanted it. The top follows the unit, and the unit follows a level.

Where there is a lift, whether it can be booked out and padded matters as much as its size. The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. A piece carried on edge up a flight has to clear the ceiling above the stairs as well as the walls either side of it. The exception is a double vanity, which is a kitchen length in bathroom width and behaves like a worktop from the tail lift onwards. Protection goes down the stairs as well as along the hall.

Say what you have and where it came from before anything is booked, because thickness and batch decide what can be done with it. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. It usually means the bathroom is decided late, after the kitchen, and by then the offcut that would have suited it has gone. Repeat bathrooms come cheaper per top, not per square metre.
