Stone bar tops in Hampton Wick

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

The buildings and streets around Hampton Wick

What stone bar top work actually involves in Hampton Wick depends on what you are fitting into, and around here that is not one thing. Small Georgian and Victorian cottages in a compact village layout, with kitchens often only 2m to 2.6m of run and a doorway at each end, so the design is about tall storage and a single well-planned run rather than an island. If you are not sure, say so when you get in touch. It is a normal answer and we work with it.

Suspended timber floors flex underfoot, and anything that moves beneath a unit shows up later as a lipped join. Every face of a bar is on show from a stool, so the front edge and the underside of the nose are profiled and polished rather than left as the saw finished them. The front edge takes the wear, so the front edge takes the detail.

That rear wall carries the back door and the only window, which leaves very little uninterrupted length for a sink run. In a cellar the headroom fixes the counter height first and everything else works back from it, and the stair down is the tightest part of the route because stone carried downward is harder to control than stone carried up. A bar in a small room is drawn for the stools it will take.

The fabric of the place is Georgian cottage, Victorian terrace, Victorian villa and modern riverside flats. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Hampton Wick is its own job

A firm that has not worked in Hampton Wick tends to find out about the access on the morning of the fit, which is too late to change anything. The village sits at the foot of Kingston Bridge, so traffic queues through it most of the day, the streets are narrow with residents' bays, and many cottages open straight onto the pavement with no front garden to stage the load in. Doors opening straight onto the street mean the slab goes from tailgate to threshold in one move, so the van has to be right at the door or the job stalls. We put it in writing at the quote, and the workmanship is guaranteed for five years after we have fitted it.

The work

What bar tops involves

The fitting workmanship carries the same five year guarantee as a kitchen worktop, and the support under the front edge is covered by it as much as the stone above is. We measure the frame before we measure the top, because a bar top is set level to itself and the frame is what it will be packed off. You end up with a front edge that takes people leaning on it all evening without the top shifting, because the load was worked out before the stone was ordered.

The piece is open on the front, the ends and the underside, which is the reverse of a kitchen run that hides three of its four edges against something. Corbels are set out to the stool positions so that nobody has one arriving between their knees, and they are fixed to structure rather than to a lining board. The back is scribed to whatever the plaster does, and the front is set out from a line of its own. Frame checked, steel in, stone down.

The money

What it costs in Hampton Wick

The finished edge is where the money goes on a bar, since the front, the ends and the underside are all polished where a kitchen run would only ever show one face. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. That £110 to £550 per square metre buys the slab and nothing else. Templating, machining, edges, cut-outs and the fitting day are counted and charged one by one. A bar is quoted as a bar, not as extra worktop.

The shape of the run

The two runs are read against each other rather than against the floor, so they are set to one datum taken across the aisle instead of measured up from the boards. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. One level or two, and it is decided early.

Hampton Wick in the housing figures

In Hampton Wick, the upper bands are better represented here than in most of the capital. Where the same detail repeats across several rooms the support is standardised once and cut to length afterwards. The knee space is drawn before the bracket is.

What Hampton Wick asks for

We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

Access

Getting stone into a Hampton Wick kitchen

The village sits at the foot of Kingston Bridge, so traffic queues through it most of the day, the streets are narrow with residents' bays, and many cottages open straight onto the pavement with no front garden to stage the load in.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Hampton Wick

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Which postcodes do you cover around Hampton Wick?

Yes. Hampton Wick is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are KT1. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames. A skip, a delivery lorry or a run of scaffolding takes the frontage the van needed, so the street is worth a look the day before rather than on the morning. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The offcut from a bar sink leaves in the van. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.

What do the kitchens in Hampton Wick do to bar tops?

Many have had the ground floor chimney breast removed to gain three hundred millimetres, and the gained strip is newer blockwork standing proud of the old plaster. A bar in one of these houses is either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the two behave differently. Blockwork holds a fixing and plasterboard does not. A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. Steel spans what a carcass cannot.

Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Hampton Wick kitchens?

Boxed-in pipework running along the skirting looks harmless until a loaded trolley has to pass it. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The route is measured to the deepest part of the piece. Where parking runs down both sides the road is left as a single lane, and a van standing in it has to be somewhere it does not stop a bin lorry. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. A suspension is booked for the fitting day, not the delivery hour.

Do you get much bar tops work in Hampton Wick?

No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. One detail across several rooms keeps the fixings the same. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. The evening use is what the piece is sized for.

What decides the price of a worktop in Hampton Wick?

A galley that is also the route to the back door is a corridor first and a kitchen second, and what the shape can take is set by the traffic going through it. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. A breakfast counter and a trade bar are not the same brief. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.

What do I need to sort out first?

Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A bar top is set to one datum along its own length. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. One staircase can serve an owner on the first floor and a managed tenancy on the second, so the access arrangement changes at every landing while the building stays the same. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Sealing a bar top is a yearly job and we say so.

What if the base units are out of level?

Variation past what packing can take up has to be corrected in the carcasses before we cut, because the template records the units as they stand. Level is checked at the template, which is the point of measuring in the room rather than off a drawing. The check comes before the measuring rather than after, because the whole drawing is set out from that plane. Two walls each a degree out give an internal corner two degrees out, and the whole of that error lands in the mitre. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. The frame is made true before the stone is measured.

Which materials need sealing and which do not?

Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Day to day all three want soap and water; abrasive creams and scouring pads are what dull a polished surface. The staircase rises over the back room in a good number of these, so a sloping bulkhead sits over one end of the run and a piece cannot be stood on edge beneath it. A bar in a house of this age is usually either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the cellar is the harder of the two because the headroom fixes the counter height before anybody else gets a say. A trade bar and a home bar are different pieces of work.

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. Each cut-out is priced on its own line, so a range, a bowl and a half, a boiling tap and a drainer are four items rather than one. Two runs of similar length nest as a pair off one slab, and if one of them grows by a few hundred millimetres the pair stops fitting and the yield changes for both. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. A raised tier is a second piece, priced and drawn as one.

Is a full-height splashback practical in a Hampton Wick kitchen?

Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. A two-up two-down has a kitchen that was never designed to be one, so the run is short, the ceiling is low and every millimetre of depth gets argued over. The floor is suspended timber, so the frame is fixed back to a wall as well as bearing down on the boards, or the whole thing shifts when somebody leans on the nose. The back of a freestanding bar is finished like the front.
