Reception counter work in Holland Park tends to go wrong in the planning rather than in the fitting, and planning it properly means starting from the building. Villas here carry full-width lower ground kitchen and family rooms, frequently with two islands or an island plus a separate prep run, and single pieces of 3.6m and up are normal rather than exceptional. Book-matched veined stone on a waterfall island and a matching full-height rear panel is the standard specification, which means slab selection at the yard comes before any cutting. Whichever it is, the process below is the same, and the figure you get after templating is fixed.

Party wall settlement pulls the floor down at one side of the room, so a long run reads level at one end and not at the other. What decides the piece sizes is the lobby and the way into it, since a counter top runs longer than a kitchen worktop and has no cabinet run to break it up. A counter is measured in the lobby it will stand in.

Rooms are tall with deep window reveals, and a run finishing into a reveal is templated to it rather than assumed square. The commercial work around housing of this age is shopfront: a narrow deep unit off a parade, with the reception running back from the door into the depth of the plan. A converted house wants a counter that reads as furniture.

What the surveys keep coming back to is Italianate detached and semi-detached villa, large stucco terrace, 1960s-70s architect-designed infill house and gated modern townhouse. The join count is decided by which of those the room sits in.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Holland Park is its own job

Nothing about fitting stone in Holland Park is guesswork on our part, because guesswork with a machined slab is expensive. Several roads are private or gated with gravel drives and speed humps, and gravel is the enemy of an A-frame trolley, so the load usually has to be carried from the road edge. Where houses have their own side gate to the garden it is worth using it, because the main staircases here are wide but turn twice and the balustrades are frequently listed and cannot be unbolted. The island pieces routinely exceed what six men can hand-carry down a domestic stair, so budget for glass suction and a stair crawler rather than assuming extra labour will solve it. Once the template is signed off the price is fixed. It does not move because the job turned out fiddly.

The work

What reception counters involves

Reception counter work covers the stone only: the upper counter, the transaction shelf, the return between them and any upstand behind, all made to a carcass a joiner has already built and fixed. The templater attends once the carcass is in and fixed, and records what the joiner actually built rather than what the elevation showed. You end up with every visible edge finished alike, front, back and both returns, because a counter is seen from all sides in a way a worktop never is.

A reception counter has a public face and a staff face, and the two are detailed differently because they are used differently. Where a run is longer than one piece can be, the join is placed over a support and away from the line the eye travels along. These conversions rarely have a square wall at the back of the lobby, so the return is scribed and the front edge is set out straight regardless. Templated to the carcass, not to the elevation.

The money

What it costs in Holland Park

What the joiner builds moves the figure as much as what we cut, because a carcass arriving square and level takes hours off the fitting day. An island is a yield question before it is a design one: it either comes out of the same slab as the perimeter or it needs a second. A per square metre figure of £110 to £550 describes stone, not a worktop. What turns one into the other is machining and a fitting day, and both are listed as themselves. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

What Holland Park asks for

Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.

The shape of the run

If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. A long straight counter is far easier to draw than to support, because the knee recess takes out the leg the span would otherwise have used. A counter join lines up with the plane above it or it gets moved.

Holland Park in the housing figures

Across Holland Park, this is high-band housing on the council tax measure. Every survey starts from a blank sheet. Several desks across one estate come off a single slab run, or they will never read as a set. The knee recess appears on the drawing in millimetres.

Access

Getting stone into a Holland Park kitchen

Several roads are private or gated with gravel drives and speed humps, and gravel is the enemy of an A-frame trolley, so the load usually has to be carried from the road edge. Where houses have their own side gate to the garden it is worth using it, because the main staircases here are wide but turn twice and the balustrades are frequently listed and cannot be unbolted.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Holland Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do your own fitters come out to Holland Park?

Yes. Holland Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W11, W14. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea. A drive behind an electric gate depends on somebody being in to open it and on the gate staying open while the load comes off. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Service yards want a name and a time, given a week out. Template and fit both happen at the property, so there is nothing to drive to and nothing to collect.

What should I expect from reception counters in a Holland Park kitchen?

Listing and conservation conditions apply to a good number of these, which constrains what can be altered around the kitchen rather than what goes on top of the units. The commercial work around housing of this age is shopfront: a narrow unit off a high-street parade, entered up a step, with the reception running back from the door into the depth of the plan. Old shopfronts were never sized for a three-metre top. A scribe has a working limit, and past twenty millimetres or so the back edge starts eating depth the run cannot spare. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. A shadow gap solves what a scribe cannot.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Holland Park?

A short run of external steps before the communal door means a piece is lifted twice before the staircase proper has even started. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Revolving doors get measured rather than assumed. Some drives are wide enough for the van and too short for the tail lift, because the tail lift needs its own clear metre behind the vehicle. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. The counter is unwrapped inside the building, never at the kerb.

Is reception counters what Holland Park is known for?

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Apertures change from desk to desk, so each drawing is its own. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A weekend fit is planned as a weekend fit from the outset.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. Yield on a counter is lost in the returns, not in the length. Reckon on £110 to £550 per square metre for the material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting itemised separately.

What state does a Holland Park kitchen have to be in before you template?

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The knee recess is checked for square before the shelf is cut. Send photographs taken walking from the pavement through the door to where the counter will stand, along with the carcass dimensions once the joiner has fixed it. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. A porter's desk is specified to outlast the porter.

How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?

Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. A curved front is a waterjet job and a carcass problem both.

Can a damaged worktop be repaired in place?

The workmanship guarantee runs 5 years on every kitchen we fit. A remade piece is cut from the same slab run wherever the slab allows, because a replacement from another batch will not match across a join. Our own installers do the carry, so there is nobody in the middle to argue with about it. The measurement that decides everything is the diagonal between the underside of the flight above and the outer edge of the turn below it. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. A counter piece walked in on edge needs the headroom checked too.

Which materials need sealing and which do not?

Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Bleach and limescale remover harm a polished finish rather than clean it, whichever material is on the units. A basement kitchen has a flagged or concrete floor laid straight onto the ground, so it is solid, cold and rarely within ten millimetres of level. That entrance is what caps the counter, because a shopfront door and the step in front of it will take far less than a full-length top, so the run is broken over a support in the carcass rather than gambled on. The service road at the back is often the real way in.

Do most Holland Park kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?

Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. The closet wing is a narrow projection at the back with windows on two sides, which leaves very little continuous wall for a run. A front room converted into a surgery or a salon gives a small lobby and a counter that still has to leave width for people to get past it. A pharmacy counter is two heights before anybody draws it.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
