A visitor or a neighbour parked on the drive is a five-minute problem at eight in the morning and an hour-long one at eleven. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. Yield on a counter is lost in the returns, not in the length.

If your own slab breaks there is no matching replacement to hand, and that is the real difference. How the slab has been stored is worth telling us, because stone kept flat is not stone off a rack. The quote is itemised, so a job where you already hold the slab is the same job with the material line taken off it. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. The apertures for cable and card readers are what changes between one desk and the next, and every change is a fresh drawing rather than a variation. A repeatable counter needs a repeatable material.
