Morden Park kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Lath and plaster, a settled floor and a hall with a turn in it are the three things that decide how this job runs. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.
Garage and side-return infills are the common upgrade rather than large rear extensions, producing a long thin kitchen with cabinets down one side and appliances at the cold end. Utility runs off the kitchen are frequently specified in the same material.
Where the side return has been filled in, the old external wall is now an internal one and still carries its render, its gutter line and its old fixings. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
On these streets the housing is 1930s semi, 1950s council-built house and Postwar bungalow. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Off-street parking is normal and roads are wide, so the van gets to the door. The pinch point is the side passage into an infill extension, which is often built out to within 700mm of the boundary fence.

What gets asked for here
Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.
Second or third on the list around here, after worktop installation. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

The building, and what it does to the job
Infill extensions are frequently narrower than a standard worktop plus walkway, so confirm the finished internal width before ordering, 600mm depth plus an island is not always possible.
Floors and walls that have settled towards the back addition, so the existing run is out of level and the stone will show it the moment it is set and levelled properly.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Morden Park
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Morden Park, or just list it?
Yes. Morden Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM4. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Merton. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop replacement in Morden Park?
A long piece has to come through the front door, down the hall, round the newel post and through a doorway with a step down into the addition. In most Victorian terraces the kitchen sits in the back addition, so you get a narrow galley with one outside wall and nothing square to work off. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Infill extensions are frequently narrower than a standard worktop plus walkway, so confirm the finished internal width before ordering, 600mm depth plus an island is not always possible.
Is access a problem in Morden Park?
Off-street parking is normal and roads are wide, so the van gets to the door. The pinch point is the side passage into an infill extension, which is often built out to within 700mm of the boundary fence. The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The strip-out is planned around it.
Is worktop replacement common in Morden Park?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.
What decides the price of a worktop in Morden Park?
An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. The laminate has been covering it up. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
