Notting Hill kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1840s-1860s stucco-fronted townhousecommunal garden square terraceVictorian coach-house mewsEdwardian mansion flat

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. Sink, tap and hob on site, not on order.

The Ladbroke Estate houses put the kitchen on the lower ground floor at the back, usually knocked through into a rear extension that runs out under the communal garden wall, so you get a 3.2-4m wall run plus an island of 2.4m or more. Mews conversions behind the main terraces are the opposite job entirely: a single galley run of 2.6-3.2m against one wall with a hob undercut and no room for a return.

Almost the whole area is conservation area with single yellow and RBKC residents' bays, so a slab van gets a loading window rather than a parking space. Measure the turn at the foot of the area steps before you cut anything, because a 3m piece that clears the stair will still refuse the 90-degree swing at the bottom.

The rear room is generous with a chimney breast in one corner, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends whatever the plan drew. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the template picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn.

The buildings themselves are mostly 1840s-1860s stucco-fronted townhouse, communal garden square terrace, Victorian coach-house mews and Edwardian mansion flat. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

Of everything we do around here, this is the one that comes up most, with worktop fabrication and worktop installation behind it.

Getting stone into the room

Most houses are entered either up a raised front step or down external area steps into the lightwell, and that bottom landing is where slabs get stuck - it is often under 900mm deep with a right-angle turn straight into the kitchen door.

Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. That is part of what the visit is for.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Notting Hill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Notting Hill?

Yes. Notting Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W11. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Notting Hill change how worktop templating works?

The rear room is generous with a chimney breast in one corner, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends whatever the plan drew. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Measure the turn at the foot of the area steps before you cut anything, because a 3m piece that clears the stair will still refuse the 90-degree swing at the bottom.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Notting Hill?

Almost the whole area is conservation area with single yellow and RBKC residents' bays, so a slab van gets a loading window rather than a parking space. Most houses are entered either up a raised front step or down external area steps into the lightwell, and that bottom landing is where slabs get stuck - it is often under 900mm deep with a right-angle turn straight into the kitchen door. Carrying through the house means protecting the whole route first: floor boarded, banister padded, and the front door held open on a wedge rather than by hand. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Is Notting Hill mostly worktop templating work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop fabrication and worktop installation. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

Why do two Notting Hill kitchens the same size price differently?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
