Notting Dale kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

late Victorian workers' cottage terracepostwar low-rise estate1970s deck-access blocksmall industrial and studio conversion

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. Sink, tap and hob on site, not on order.

Cottage terraces around the Latimer Road end have narrow rear kitchens, typically 2.1-2.6m of run against the party wall with the back door interrupting it, and a lot of them have never been extended. Estate flats run smaller again - a single 1.8-2.4m run with a fitted appliance housing at one end and no space for an island of any kind.

Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. Victorian party walls and chimney-breast returns bow along their length, so the template plots the real line rather than assuming a straight one - the template picks up points every few hundred millimetres down the back of the run and the drawing carries that curve through to the saw. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

What we are usually templating in is late Victorian workers' cottage terrace, postwar low-rise estate, 1970s deck-access block and small industrial and studio conversion. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Getting stone into the room

Estate blocks have controlled entry, communal bin stores at the base of the stair and lifts that are only wide enough for a slab stood on edge if it goes in diagonally, so lift internal dimensions need checking at template not on the day. Street parking is permit-controlled with narrow carriageways where a Luton parked kerbside blocks the road, so a banksman is worth having.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

The building, and what it does to the job

Small runs but awkward buildings - the time here goes into the carry and the lift, not the cutting.

The shape of the run

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. The drawing leaves site complete.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Notting Dale

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Notting Dale on your patch?

Yes. Notting Dale is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W11. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. Two hours is the realistic figure. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop templating in Notting Dale be any different from anywhere else?

Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. Alcoves either side of the breast are rarely the same width and rarely parallel, so each one is templated as its own piece with its own scribe. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Small runs but awkward buildings - the time here goes into the carry and the lift, not the cutting.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Notting Dale?

Estate blocks have controlled entry, communal bin stores at the base of the stair and lifts that are only wide enough for a slab stood on edge if it goes in diagonally, so lift internal dimensions need checking at template not on the day. Street parking is permit-controlled with narrow carriageways where a Luton parked kerbside blocks the road, so a banksman is worth having. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Is Notting Dale really a worktop templating area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. Appliances on site, not on order. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Notting Dale?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. One measurement never describes it, which is why a tape reading taken before the visit rarely matches the template. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. No stone is cut from a plan.
