Poplar kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1950s Festival-era planned estate1960s-70s concrete tower2010s onwards regeneration block

Dense concrete and blockwork mean the wall cannot be chased back or packed out, so the stone carries the scribe. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

Newer regeneration flats put the kitchen along the flank of an open living space with a 2.8m run and no island.

The planned post-war housing has small, well-proportioned separate kitchens of roughly 2m to 2.5m with a serving hatch that people either keep or close up. Lift car height, not just floor area, decides whether a 3m piece goes up on edge or gets jointed in the workshop.

A tower block runs one or two lifts for many floors, so a lift out of service postpones a job rather than making it harder. Unit height is the other issue: legs sit on an uneven screed or hard concrete with no give, so the template reads the top of every carcass rather than assuming they share a height. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

On these streets the housing is 1950s Festival-era planned estate, 1960s-70s concrete tower and 2010s onwards regeneration block. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Getting stone into the room

Estate roads are wide with parking courts, but many are behind bollards or resident barriers and the shopping precinct is pedestrianised, so the last stretch is often on foot. Concrete towers here have narrow original lifts with a low car height, which matters for a slab carried on edge.

A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. Two hours is the realistic figure.

Getting stone into a Poplar kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Poplar

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Poplar, or just list it?

Yes. Poplar is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E14. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. Two hours is the realistic figure. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop templating in Poplar?

Concrete panel walls bow noticeably over the length of a run, so the template picks up the real line and the back edge is cut to follow it. Concrete and dense block walls in ex-council stock cannot be chased back or packed out to suit, so the template takes the wall exactly as it is and the stone carries the scribe. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Lift car height, not just floor area, decides whether a 3m piece goes up on edge or gets jointed in the workshop.

Is access a problem in Poplar?

Estate roads are wide with parking courts, but many are behind bollards or resident barriers and the shopping precinct is pedestrianised, so the last stretch is often on foot. Concrete towers here have narrow original lifts with a low car height, which matters for a slab carried on edge. The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. The template records it along with everything else.

Is Poplar really a worktop templating area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. The room as it is, not as it was drawn. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Units fitted, fixed and level first.

What decides the price of a worktop in Poplar?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. Every base unit fixed to the wall, packed and levelled, and any dry-lining or patching completed - the template reads the wall face it is given, so that has to be the finished face. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. No stone is cut from a plan.
