Stone bar tops in Stockwell
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Stockwell kitchens
The buildings and streets around Stockwell
Half of what we get asked about stone bar top work in Stockwell could be answered by a tape measure and ten minutes in the room in question. The conservation-area villas have deep plans where kitchens go into the rear at ground or lower-ground level with a run plus a freestanding block, while the surrounding estates have standardised flat kitchens with a fixed sink and a boxed riser. Many villas are subdivided, so a single building can hold three different kitchen sizes. The quotation visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It is also the simplest way to find out which you have.
Gas, waste and later wiring were boxed in against the wall long after the house was built, and that boxing is what the run has to clear. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. Support under the overhang comes first on the drawing.
Original panelling and shutter boxes stand out from the structural wall, so the face the units meet is joinery rather than plaster. The floor is suspended timber, so the frame is fixed back to a wall as well as bearing down on the boards, or the whole thing shifts when somebody leans on the nose. A garage floor slopes and the frame takes that up.
The stock we template in here is Georgian and early Victorian villa, Victorian terrace, Large postwar estate and Interwar block. Which one you have changes the order of the day more than the design does.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Stockwell is its own job
Half of quoting a kitchen in Stockwell is understanding the approach to it, which is why the survey is done in person. Estate blocks have secure entry, narrow lifts and shared stairs, and the parking courts sit away from the entrances. Villa properties have railed front steps and a lower-ground area entrance that is the only realistic way in for stone. Subdivided villas have kitchens fitted into rooms with original cornice and skirting, so the back edge has to be scribed around a skirting that is often 20mm proud at the bottom. Somebody comes out to Stockwell, looks at all of it, and puts a number on it before you decide anything.
The work
What bar tops involves
The work is quoted as its own item rather than as extra worktop metreage, because a bar carries a load a kitchen run never sees and the support beneath it is a real cost. We measure the frame before we measure the top, because a bar top is set level to itself and the frame is what it will be packed off. You are left with every visible face finished to one standard, the underside of the front edge included, which is the face a seated person looks straight at.
A bar top is a worktop that has been asked to do a different job, since it carries people on its front edge for hours at a time instead of taking pans off a hob. A bar sink, a drip tray or a socket through the surface is machined at the works with radiused internal corners, exactly as a kitchen cut-out would be. The back is scribed to whatever the plaster does, and the front is set out from a line of its own. Supported first, polished second, fitted last.

The money
What it costs in Stockwell
The finished edge is where the money goes on a bar, since the front, the ends and the underside are all polished where a kitchen run would only ever show one face. In a galley the runs are short and the cut-outs are close together, so the fixed operations carry more of the total than the stone does. Supply-only material is £110 to £550 per square metre. The more useful question is not which end of that you are at, but how many operations the cut list carries. Frame, support and top, each priced as itself.

period detached houses and villas
Stockwell in the housing figures
In the streets around Stockwell, very few homes are lived in by their owners. Where a fixture is scrubbed by people who never picked it, sintered stone survives products a resin-bound top will not. The projection is the first line on the drawing.

The building, and what it does to the job
A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. The knee space is measured before the bracket is specified.

What Stockwell asks for
Not a domestic job, so it is not ranked against the streets around it. Those streets generate worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation. Same slabs, same saw, same installers.

Getting stone into a Stockwell kitchen
Estate blocks have secure entry, narrow lifts and shared stairs, and the parking courts sit away from the entrances. Villa properties have railed front steps and a lower-ground area entrance that is the only realistic way in for stone.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Stockwell
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Stockwell on your patch?
Yes. Stockwell is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW9, SW8. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Lambeth. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The van stands for the frame as well as the top. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.
What should I expect from bar tops in a Stockwell kitchen?
A basement is often reached by its own door under the front steps, and that door is smaller than anything else on the route. A bar in one of these houses is either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the two behave differently. Deep skirtings push the frame forward and the top covers it. Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. Where the wall is bowed the rear rail takes it up.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Stockwell?
Standing a three-metre length on end takes more headroom outside the car than inside it, and a low lobby ceiling is what actually stops it. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The corbels go in before the top does, and both use the same door. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. A bar fit is a day, not a drop.
Do you get much bar tops work in Stockwell?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. The brief changes, but the nose still has to be carried. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Where the use is hard, the surface is chosen for it.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Where the aisle is too tight the usual answer is a reduced-depth top on one side, and a 500mm run is a different cut, a different sink and a different drainer to a 600mm one. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. The overhang is drawn before the layout is signed off. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.
What state does a Stockwell kitchen have to be in before you template?
A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. A bar pushed sideways was fixed to plasterboard. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. Some doors in a building need a consent letter and some need nothing at all, so the first question is which arrangement applies here rather than which one is usual. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Porcelain forgives the cleaning products a bar actually meets.
Will you fit stone onto units that are not level?
An island is where this usually shows, standing free with no wall to level against. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. The check comes before the measuring rather than after, because the whole drawing is set out from that plane. Where the boxing stands proud of the finished wall the upstand behind it has to be broken into separate lengths, because one piece cannot pass it. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. Every obstruction under the top is a seating decision too.
How do you cut out for an undermounted sink?
A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. A bar top is a shape decision with steel attached to it.
Which materials need sealing and which do not?
No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Day to day all three want soap and water; abrasive creams and scouring pads are what dull a polished surface. Georgian houses put the kitchen in a basement or a rear closet wing, and the stairs down to it are the tightest part of the whole route. In a cellar the headroom fixes the counter height first and everything else works back from it, and the stair down is the tightest part of the route because stone carried downward is harder to control than stone carried up. Beer lines and a glasswasher change what goes under the top.
What do drainer grooves add to the job?
They read strongly across a dark stone and are nearly invisible on a pale one, so look before deciding. The grooves sit inside the depth of the top with stone left either side, so a shallow run limits them. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. Original quarry tile is often still down under two or three later floor coverings, which is why the finished floor height is rarely what anyone expects. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. A bar top is judged from a stool, not from the doorway.
