Stone bar tops in Winchmore Hill

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

The buildings and streets around Winchmore Hill

Georgian cottageEdwardian detached1930s semiconservation-area villa

There is a reason we ask about the building before we talk about stone, and stone bar top work in Winchmore Hill is a good illustration of it. Around The Green the older cottages have small, low-ceilinged kitchens where a chunky worktop and a butler sink is the whole look, while the Edwardian and interwar houses further out get full rear extensions with a long island and a bank of tall units. Two quite different specs within a ten-minute walk. The tape measure decides it, not the description above, and not anything anybody says over the telephone.

Injected damp courses and re-rendered lower walls leave the bottom metre standing proud of everything above it. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. The bar is set level to itself and packed off the frame.

A semi has a side passage, and whether it is wide enough to carry a piece flat and turn it in at the back door is the first thing worth measuring. A bar in one of these houses is either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the two behave differently. The riser gets notched around, not built away from.

The building stock is Georgian cottage, Edwardian detached, 1930s semi and conservation-area villa. Two of those can sit on the same street and quote a long way apart.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Winchmore Hill is its own job

What makes Winchmore Hill its own case is not the stone, it is getting to it and what it has to sit against. The ground falls steeply from Winchmore Hill Road down towards Green Lanes, so on the lower streets you are carrying a slab downhill on a slope with steps into the front door. Conservation-area houses often have gravel or York-stone paths that mark easily. Low ceilings in the older cottage stock mean tall wall units sit close to the top - confirm the finished worktop height first or the upstand and the cabinet do not meet. It is our problem to solve, and solving it starts with a tape measure.

The work

What bar tops involves

Material choice is part of it: quartz for most indoor bars, porcelain or sintered stone where citrus, wine and strong cleaning products land on the surface every day. We measure the frame before we measure the top, because a bar top is set level to itself and the frame is what it will be packed off. You end up with a front edge that takes people leaning on it all evening without the top shifting, because the load was worked out before the stone was ordered.

A bar top is a worktop that has been asked to do a different job, since it carries people on its front edge for hours at a time instead of taking pans off a hob. The front edge is profiled and polished on every exposed face, the underside included, because that face sits at eye level for anybody sitting down at it. In a house of this age the bar generally stands in a through-lounge or a cellar, and neither floor is flat enough to set a frame down on without packing it. Every face somebody can see is finished.

The money

What it costs in Winchmore Hill

A bar top is priced from what holds it up as much as from the stone, because the steel, the corbels and the time spent fixing them are real lines rather than an allowance. An island is a yield question before it is a design one: it either comes out of the same slab as the perimeter or it needs a second. Thickness, finish and colour move a slab within the £110 to £550 supply band before anyone touches it, so that figure is settled by what you pick rather than by the room. Edge work is counted by the face, and a bar has more of them.

Winchmore Hill in the housing figures

Locally the council tax banding sits near the top of the London range. Every survey starts from a blank sheet. Where the same detail repeats across several rooms the support is standardised once and cut to length afterwards. The knee space is drawn before the bracket is.

The shape of the run

Knee room under a breakfast bar is measured from the face of the cabinets rather than from the edge of the stone, so a deep apron quietly eats the depth somebody actually gets to sit in. A join in a bar cannot land where somebody sits, so the stool positions are marked on the drawing before the piece is broken anywhere. A bar top is a shape decision with steel attached to it.

What Winchmore Hill asks for

We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop design & quotation, worktop templating and worktop installation. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

Getting stone into a Winchmore Hill kitchen

The ground falls steeply from Winchmore Hill Road down towards Green Lanes, so on the lower streets you are carrying a slab downhill on a slope with steps into the front door. Conservation-area houses often have gravel or York-stone paths that mark easily.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Winchmore Hill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do your own fitters come out to Winchmore Hill?

Yes. Winchmore Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N21. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Enfield. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. A licensed room sets the hours and the parking has to agree. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.

What should I expect from bar tops in a Winchmore Hill kitchen?

The rear room is generous with a chimney breast in one corner, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends whatever the plan drew. In a cellar the headroom fixes the counter height first and everything else works back from it, and the stair down is the tightest part of the route because stone carried downward is harder to control than stone carried up. Two tiers where a single piece will not reach. A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The back of a bar is seen, so the back is finished.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Winchmore Hill?

A meter cupboard set into the hall wall narrows the run at exactly the height a carried piece travels. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A polished front edge is protected from the tail lift to the frame. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Nothing is rushed off a tail lift onto an unsupported nose.

Is Winchmore Hill really a bar tops area?

No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop templating and worktop installation. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. Extension work runs late far more often than it runs early, and the worktop is close to the last thing in, so the date agreed at the start is rarely the date that happens. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. The evening use is what the piece is sized for. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Bars are quoted as their own item, never as extra metreage.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Three stools along one side need more clear length than most plans allow, and once the seating depth is fixed the piece either grows or it loses a seat. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. Where the two levels meet is a detail, not an afterthought. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.

What state does a Winchmore Hill kitchen have to be in before you template?

Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. Noggins go into a stud wall before a bar is fixed to it. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. Some doors in a building need a consent letter and some need nothing at all, so the first question is which arrangement applies here rather than which one is usual. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Sealing a bar top is a yearly job and we say so.

Will I be able to see the joins?

A join sits over a cabinet gable. It never spans a gap and never runs through a cut-out. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. An island often runs in one piece where a wall run cannot. Where an overhang is too deep for steel on its own the choice is a leg at the end or a bracket underneath, and a bracket that lands where a knee goes is worse than no bracket at all. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. Stools need floor as well as knee room, and both are drawn.

How much upkeep is a stone worktop?

No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. The party wall is the straightest surface in the house and everything else has moved away from it over a century. The floor is suspended timber, so the frame is fixed back to a wall as well as bearing down on the boards, or the whole thing shifts when somebody leans on the nose. Scribed at the back and free at the front.

What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?

A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. The sink, tap and hob have to be physically in the room at the template, not merely ordered, because the cut-out is machined to the item itself. Two bowls means two cut-outs and a bridge of stone between them, which decides where the sink can go. A corbel on show under an overhang is a decision about how the piece looks from a stool, so it gets settled alongside the edge profile rather than left to whoever fits it. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. The bar length answers to the seats, not to the wall behind it.

Do most Winchmore Hill kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?

A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. These were built with a scullery that has since been swallowed by an extension, leaving a change of floor level roughly where the run crosses. Original walls give nothing straight to work to, which is why a bar here is built as its own frame and scribed at the back rather than trusted to the plaster behind it. The stone is the last element of the joinery, not the first.
