Reception counters and desks in World's End

Yes. World's End is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SW10. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Outside opening hours is usually when the kerb is free. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. A join forced by the route still sits over a gable, so it is no poorer a join for that. Lift doors close on a timer that takes no account of somebody holding a worktop, so a pair of hands stays on the buttons at each end. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. Two heights means two carries, and the low one is not the difficult one.

Delivery to the workshop has to be arranged and dated, since nothing is nested until it is there. How much slab you hold matters: upstands and any remake have to come out of the same batch. How the slab has been stored is worth telling us, because stone kept flat is not stone off a rack. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. A desk somebody sits at all day is specified for wear.

An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. Where the kitchen is on the entrance level, the piece comes off the deck and turns straight in without going up or down at all. A housing office counter is used hard and cleaned harder, so the surface is specified for wear and the front edge for being leaned on all day. Old shopfronts were never sized for a three-metre top.
