Belmont kitchens

The buildings and streets around Belmont

1930s semi1930s parade with maisonettespost-war infill housing

Reception counter work in Belmont is not one job repeated, because the kitchens here are not one kind of kitchen. Consistent interwar semis around the circle, mostly still with the kitchen and dining room as separate rooms, and the common upgrade is knocking those two together for a 3.6m run with a breakfast peninsula rather than building outwards. Original serving hatches turn up regularly and get closed off during the refit. Nothing gets cut from a description. It gets cut from a template taken off the units once they are in.

The old larder leaves behind a thick cold shelf and a vent brick through the outer wall, and both have to go before that wall reads flat. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. Reception work is quiet work, done to a building already open.

A radiator sits under the rear window on the outside wall, and moving it is plumbing that belongs before the template rather than after it. Districts built out between the wars have parades of their own, and the practices in them run to a counter with a waiting room behind it and a filing run under the shelf. The service road at the back is often the real way in.

The stock we template in here is 1930s semi, 1930s parade with maisonettes and post-war infill housing. Which one you have changes the order of the day more than the design does.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Belmont is its own job

A slab cut to the wrong assumption about Belmont is scrap, so the assumptions get checked in person first. Quiet residential roads with drives and straightforward kerbside loading, plus maisonettes over the parade shops that need an external rear staircase and a careful turn at the top. Knock-through kitchens leave a stub of the old dividing wall, and that stub is almost never plumb, so template it rather than assume a straight line to the return. None of that is a surprise if somebody has actually looked. That is what the survey is for.

The work

What reception counters involves

What this is not is joinery. We do not build the carcass, and it has to be finished, fixed and level before there is anything for a templater to measure. Fitting is booked around the building rather than around our diary, which on a working reception usually means an evening or a weekend. You end up with the building open the next morning, because the work was sequenced around the hours it was allowed rather than around a normal working day.

The counter is the piece of stone in a building that gets touched most and looked at longest, which is why the front edge and the seams carry the specification. Where a run is longer than one piece can be, the join is placed over a support and away from the line the eye travels along. A bay window behind the desk backlights the whole counter, so the polish on the front edge and the seams get more attention than usual. The lobby opens as normal the following morning.

The money

What it costs in Belmont

What the joiner builds moves the figure as much as what we cut, because a carcass arriving square and level takes hours off the fitting day. The return into the wall and the free end are two different details on one piece, and both are machined rather than cut square. A per square metre figure of £110 to £550 describes stone, not a worktop. What turns one into the other is machining and a fitting day, and both are listed as themselves. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

1930s and inter-war semis

The shape of the run

A breakfast bar on the outer side is an overhang like any other, and the support under it is sized for people leaning on the end rather than for the weight of the stone alone. A long straight counter is far easier to draw than to support, because the knee recess takes out the leg the span would otherwise have used. A shallow shelf still needs a support run of its own.

1930s and inter-war semis

What Belmont asks for

Not a domestic job, so it is not ranked against the streets around it. Those streets generate worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. Same slabs, same saw, same installers.

1930s and inter-war semis

Belmont in the housing figures

Across Belmont, bay-fronted inter-war housing sets the pattern. Whatever the desk stands against was put there by an earlier trade, so it is measured and not taken on trust. Access is settled before a slab is committed.

Access

Getting stone into a Belmont kitchen

Quiet residential roads with drives and straightforward kerbside loading, plus maisonettes over the parade shops that need an external rear staircase and a careful turn at the top.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Belmont

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do your own fitters come out to Belmont?

Yes. Belmont is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA3. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Where the drive is too short for the van the back end overhangs the footway, and a footway is a route people are using rather than spare space. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Whoever holds the lease usually holds the loading bay. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.

Does the housing in Belmont change how reception counters works?

The stack serving the bathroom above comes down the rear elevation in cast iron, and its branch settles where a sink waste can reasonably be picked up. Practices in this stock are usually converted houses on or behind an interwar parade: a dental surgery, a veterinary practice or a small office with its reception in what was the front room. A pharmacy counter is two heights before anybody draws it. The face of a breast is rarely flat, and a top returning onto it picks up that bow across the last few hundred millimetres of its length. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. The template is taken to the carcass as built.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Belmont?

A level threshold with hard standing outside it is the one arrangement where a full run goes in without a single re-grip. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. Suction pads want a clean dry face, and lobby dust is not that. Having the van on the drive means the load can be staged, so the heavy pieces come off last and go straight in instead of standing outside. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. The longest counter piece decides the swing radius outside.

Does Belmont actually ask for reception counters?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. Where a family has been living around a building site for months, the finish date carries more weight than any other part of the specification. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Two desks on one site still take two templates. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. Matching across sites means matching blocks, not matching names.

What am I actually paying for, line by line?

A peninsula projects into circulation space, so its outer corners usually take a radius rather than a point, and that radius is agreed at template rather than assumed. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. The public side and the staff side take different details. The material band is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Belmont?

Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. Twist in a carcass shows first at the transaction shelf. Confirm whether the reception is at ground level or up the stair, and send the carcass drawing with the chimney breast and any bay recorded on it. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. A desk in a re-let space is specified for the next occupier too.

Do most Belmont kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?

Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. A full-height piece shows a wall that is out more than an upstand does, over the extra height. The pantry was a half-brick enclosure in the corner of the room, and where it has been taken out the wall behind it is made good brickwork rather than original plaster. The carcass is built around a chimney breast or into a bay, so the counter is drawn to a shape the joiner had to invent rather than to a rectangle, and the return between the upper counter and the transaction shelf rarely nests neatly against the long piece. Marketing suites get a permanent counter for a temporary lobby.

Can the sink be undermounted rather than sat on top?

Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. Peninsula tops are often the longest single piece in the kitchen, so if anything in the layout is going to force a second slab it is generally this one. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. Nothing is drawn square that the carcass did not build square.

Which materials need sealing and which do not?

Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. The bead where the sink and hob meet the stone is siliconed rather than sealed, and wants watching. The scullery floor was quarry tile bedded on concrete and it is often still under a laminate, sitting lower than the boards in the room it now joins. A dental or veterinary practice in this stock is usually a converted house, so the reception sits in what was the front room and the carcass is built around a chimney breast. Concierge desks work as a post room and a security point at once.

What happens between the template and the fitting day?

Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. Money does not move until the template is done. The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. Where the side return has been filled in, one side of the new room is old brick and the other is new blockwork, and the two do not behave alike. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. The height that matters most is the low one.
