Stone bar tops in Belmont

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

The buildings and streets around Belmont

1930s semi1930s parade with maisonettespost-war infill housing

Over the years the bar tops we have done in Belmont have followed a few recognisable patterns, and knowing which one you are in saves a great deal of argument later. Consistent interwar semis around the circle, mostly still with the kitchen and dining room as separate rooms, and the common upgrade is knocking those two together for a 3.6m run with a breakfast peninsula rather than building outwards. Original serving hatches turn up regularly and get closed off during the refit. Book the design and quotation visit, and someone will be at your Belmont address with a tape, the colour range and no obligation attached.

A shallow bay or a squared-off rear window means the run beneath it is rarely the same depth at both ends. Height is the other half of it, since a bar sits above the working plane and the knee room beneath is measured from the face of the frame, not from the edge of the stone. What the frame does under the stone is half the job.

The gas meter box is fixed to the flank wall beside the alley and stands proud enough to matter when a long piece is coming past it on edge. The side passage is usually wide enough for a full length to reach the room, so piece length is decided by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the front door. A breakfast counter on an end is still an overhang problem.

On these streets the housing is 1930s semi, 1930s parade with maisonettes and post-war infill housing. None of them is harder than the others; they are awkward in different ways.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Belmont is its own job

A worktop that fits in Belmont is the result of what was noticed at the survey, not of what was hoped for afterwards. Quiet residential roads with drives and straightforward kerbside loading, plus maisonettes over the parade shops that need an external rear staircase and a careful turn at the top. Knock-through kitchens leave a stub of the old dividing wall, and that stub is almost never plumb, so template it rather than assume a straight line to the return. The visit that sorts all this out is free, and there is nothing to pay until we template.

The work

What bar tops involves

It suits a home bar in a converted cellar or a lounge, a breakfast counter on the end of a run, and a working trade bar with a sink and a drip tray underneath. Cut-outs for a bar sink, a drip tray or a socket through the surface are machined before anything leaves the workshop, so nothing is cut into a finished counter in the room. You end up with one firm answerable for the whole piece, support included, so there is no argument available about whether a sagging front edge is the stone or the joinery.

A bar top is a worktop that has been asked to do a different job, since it carries people on its front edge for hours at a time instead of taking pans off a hob. The top is levelled along its own length and packed off the frame, since a floor in an older building will not give a straight line to work from. A side passage usually lets a full length reach the room, so the piece is sized by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the door. Drawn from the stool and worked back to the wall.

The money

What it costs in Belmont

Material choice moves the figure less than the detail does, and on a bar the detail means the apron, the radius and whatever sits under the front edge. It behaves like half an island on the yield and all of one on the edge profile. If you are holding two quotes, the £110 to £550 supply rate is the part they will agree on. Compare the join count, the edge profile and what the fitting line covers. The steel under the front edge is a line, not an assumption.

1930s and inter-war semis

Belmont in the housing figures

In this neighbourhood much of the housing went up in the twenties and thirties. Where a wall came out, the counter is seen from both directions and finished on both. No cut edge is left on show anywhere.

1930s and inter-war semis

What Belmont asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

1930s and inter-war semis

The carry, and what it rules out

Block paving bedded on sand can rut under a fully loaded van, and that is said to the customer beforehand rather than explained afterwards. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. Nothing is rushed off a tail lift onto an unsupported nose.

Access

Getting stone into a Belmont kitchen

Quiet residential roads with drives and straightforward kerbside loading, plus maisonettes over the parade shops that need an external rear staircase and a careful turn at the top.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Belmont

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Belmont on your patch?

Yes. Belmont is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA3. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Where the drive is shared, the half-hour the van spends in the way is agreed with the neighbour in advance rather than apologised for at the time. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. Two trips to the van, one for hardware and one for stone. Everything that involves you happens in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would bar tops in Belmont be any different from anywhere else?

Ceilings run to about two point four metres, so wall units, a splashback and an extractor are all competing for the same short band of wall. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. What the room will take decides the stool count. Old breasts carry a bulge low down where the original opening was closed up, and the units stand off it before the stone is measured at all. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. The back of a bar is seen, so the back is finished.

What is the carry like in Belmont?

The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Nothing is leaned on a stud wall while it waits to be fitted. A step up from the drive to the threshold turns the last two metres into a lift, and a lift is where two pairs of hands become the minimum. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Trestles outside beat balancing a top on a half-built frame.

Does Belmont actually ask for bar tops?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Batch work still gets its own template per room. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. A serving counter and a bar are one piece under two loads.

Where does the money go on a Belmont worktop?

A peninsula is an island with one end tied to a run, which means the join between them has to be planned rather than allowed to happen. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A breakfast counter and a trade bar are not the same brief. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

What needs to be ready before you come to Belmont?

Two alcove pieces will not swap over however similar they look, so they are marked left and right at the bench and stay that way to the van. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. Noggins go into a stud wall before a bar is fixed to it. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Seating height is set to a person or to a standard, and stated.

What is the order of events on a Belmont kitchen?

The same firm templates and fits. Nobody else is brought in to install. On the fitting day floors and door frames are protected, joins clamped flush, sink and hob sealed. Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. Suspended floors at the front meet a solid slab in the extension somewhere in the middle, and the units sit across the change. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. Elbows and glasses, not knives and pans.

What happens to the worktop that comes off?

Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. The template can be taken with the old top still down, which is why one visit covers both. Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. Where the van cannot turn on the plot it has to arrive already facing the right way, so the approach along the street is part of the plan. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. The offcut from a bar sink leaves in the van.

What if a piece cracks while it is being carried in?

A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. A remake goes back through the same cutting and polishing, so it is a return visit rather than a patch. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. The bar top is the last piece in and the first one people touch.

How many joins will a Belmont kitchen need?

Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. A raised tier is a second piece, priced and drawn as one.
