Stone bar tops in Stanmore
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Stanmore kitchens
The buildings and streets around Stanmore
In Stanmore, what the local housing does to stone bar top work is worth knowing before you commit to anything. The largest houses in the borough, where kitchens are designed rooms with a 3m or larger island, a second prep sink, integrated coffee and wine units, and a separate utility and pantry that each carry their own stone. Kosher and multi-kitchen arrangements are not unusual, meaning two hobs, two sinks and duplicated runs to keep meat and dairy preparation separate. The quotation visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It is also the simplest way to find out which you have.
Crittall windows were swapped for plastic ones in openings that were made good rather than rebuilt, which leaves reveals that are neither straight nor equal. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. Drinks stand on it for hours, which changes the material answer.
Solid brick with a render coat is firm to work against and out of plumb, so the scribe at worktop height is different from the one at plinth level. The side passage is usually wide enough for a full length to reach the room, so piece length is decided by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the front door. A cellar bar is set to the headroom first.
On this patch the buildings are 1930s detached, large post-war detached, period houses on Stanmore Hill and gated modern development. They were built to different tolerances, and the stone has to absorb that.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Stanmore is its own job
If a firm has never fitted in Stanmore, the things that decide the day will only turn up once the van is parked. Long gravel or block-paved driveways with gates and often a turning circle, so vehicles get very close, but the internal carry from the front door to the rear kitchen can be 15m or more with a hallway turn. Separate meat and dairy runs mean planning two identical worktops from the same batch so the colour matches across the room, and that is a slab reservation decision, not a fitting decision. Somebody comes out to Stanmore, looks at all of it, and puts a number on it before you decide anything.
The work
What bar tops involves
Material choice is part of it: quartz for most indoor bars, porcelain or sintered stone where citrus, wine and strong cleaning products land on the surface every day. Cut-outs for a bar sink, a drip tray or a socket through the surface are machined before anything leaves the workshop, so nothing is cut into a finished counter in the room. You end up with knee room somebody can genuinely sit in, since the support was set out to the stool positions rather than screwed on wherever it was convenient.
The job starts underneath. What the front edge is carried on gets settled before the slab, the colour or the profile is discussed at all. The front edge is profiled and polished on every exposed face, the underside included, because that face sits at eye level for anybody sitting down at it. Garage conversions are common here and their floors fall away to the old door, so the frame is levelled before a tape goes across it. Every face somebody can see is finished.

The money
What it costs in Stanmore
The finished edge is where the money goes on a bar, since the front, the ends and the underside are all polished where a kitchen run would only ever show one face. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. Across the catalogue the supply-only rate is £110 to £550 per square metre, before any of the work that turns a slab into a worktop. The steel under the front edge is a line, not an assumption.

The carry, and what it rules out
A dropped kerb wide enough for a car is not always wide enough for a long-wheelbase van, and the width of the crossing decides the rest. It decides whether the counter can stand on trestles outside while the support underneath is checked, which is the step everybody wants to skip. The bar top waits on the van until the frame is level.

Stanmore in the housing figures
In this corner of the borough, almost nothing standing predates the First World War, which takes lath and plaster out of the picture. A counter in that kind of shell is levelled to itself and the difference is taken up at the skirting rather than under the stools. A seat never sits above a seam.

What Stanmore asks for
The building stock on this patch tells us nothing useful about this service, because this service is not driven by it. It is driven by worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation on the domestic side. The method does not change.

Getting stone into a Stanmore kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions we get asked in Stanmore
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Stanmore, or just list it?
Yes. Stanmore is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA7. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Where a car has to come off the drive first, it is worth knowing whose car it is and whether the keys are in the house on the morning. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. A licensed room sets the hours and the parking has to agree. You never have to visit anything or collect anything: we template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen.
Is there anything about Stanmore buildings that catches bar tops out?
The kitchen sits on the far side of the hall from the front door, so even with easy access outside there is still a turn to make inside. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. Old floors move, so the bar is fixed back as well as down. An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The back of a bar is seen, so the back is finished.
What do you check about the route into a Stanmore property?
The front door is often the cheapest hundred millimetres on the route, because a door lifted off its hinges gives back the width its own thickness was taking. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. The frame is built in the room; only the top has to travel. A gate post set narrower than the opening looks generous from the road and stops a wide piece a metre in. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Nothing is rushed off a tail lift onto an unsupported nose.
Is bar tops what Stanmore is known for?
Not really, and claiming otherwise would cost nothing and mean nothing. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. It reflects the local housing rather than any difference in the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted here the same way it is anywhere else on the patch. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. Repeated bars get one drawing and one steel schedule. Batching several kitchens together is the one situation where buying a whole slab is cheaper per kitchen rather than more expensive. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Sintered stone earns its keep where the cleaning is harsh.
Why do two Stanmore kitchens the same size price differently?
Everything on an island is fed from underneath, extraction, a socket run, a hob and sometimes a waste, and each of them wants its hole before the top is bonded down. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A bar on an end takes the corner load a wall used to take. Supply only, material is £110 to £550 per square metre, with templating, fabrication and fitting quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
The face of a breast is rarely flat, and a top returning onto it picks up that bow across the last few hundred millimetres of its length. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. Noggins go into a stud wall before a bar is fixed to it. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. A quartz sample left on the counter for a week under the actual kitchen lights settles more arguments than any showroom, and an owner is the only person in a position to do that. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. The radius on the nose is a decision, not a default.
Is templating a separate visit from fitting?
The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. On the fitting day floors and door frames are protected, joins clamped flush, sink and hob sealed. Ceilings are lath and plaster at the front and plasterboard in the extension, and the join between the two marks where the original back wall stood. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. Corbels are a decision about how the piece looks from a seat.
What happens if a worktop is damaged getting into a Stanmore property?
A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. Chips at an edge or a corner are the usual form, because that is where stone is least supported. Stone cannot be filled and made good the way laminate can, so a damaged piece is remade rather than patched. An inward-opening door swinging back against the wall leaves less clear opening than the frame measures, and a storm porch in front of it is tighter again. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. Cellar bars go down a flight, which is the harder direction.
Do you take the old worktop away?
Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. Two trips to the van, one for hardware and one for stone.
Do you do undermounted sinks in Stanmore?
Two bowls means two cut-outs and a bridge of stone between them, which decides where the sink can go. A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and at its final height before the template, because the stone is cut to sit on it. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. Island units are rarely fixed to anything at first fix, so they get screwed to the floor and levelled against the perimeter run before the stone is measured at all. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. Nothing sits over a join that somebody leans on.

Karem did a fantastic job at installing my antique bronze mirror for my coffee/drinks unit. He was really professional and his communication throughout was clear.

We recently had the Arctic Starburst worktop installed by Worktop WorX and it looks amazing. The subtle sparkle really catches the light and gives the kitchen a clean, modern feel. The Arctic Starburst surface feels high quality, durable, and is easy to keep clean. The finish and installation from Worktop WorX were spot on. Really happy with the result and would definitely recommend both Arctic Starburst and Worktop WorX to anyone upgrading their kitchen.
