Stanmore kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.
Separate meat and dairy runs mean planning two identical worktops from the same batch so the colour matches across the room, and that is a slab reservation decision, not a fitting decision. Long gravel or block-paved driveways with gates and often a turning circle, so vehicles get very close, but the internal carry from the front door to the rear kitchen can be 15m or more with a hallway turn. The largest houses in the borough, where kitchens are designed rooms with a 3m or larger island, a second prep sink, integrated coffee and wine units, and a separate utility and pantry that each carry their own stone. Kosher and multi-kitchen arrangements are not unusual, meaning two hobs, two sinks and duplicated runs to keep meat and dairy preparation separate.
Solid brick with a render coat is firm to work against and out of plumb, so the scribe at worktop height is different from the one at plinth level. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.
On these streets the housing is 1930s detached, large post-war detached, period houses on Stanmore Hill and gated modern development. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop design & quotation comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into the room
Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. It is why the arrival time is what it is.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Stanmore
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Stanmore?
Yes. Stanmore is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA7. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Stanmore change how worktop installation works?
Solid brick with a render coat is firm to work against and out of plumb, so the scribe at worktop height is different from the one at plinth level. The carry is the easy part; the plaster around the old breast and the packing over a moved floor are not. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Separate meat and dairy runs mean planning two identical worktops from the same batch so the colour matches across the room, and that is a slab reservation decision, not a fitting decision.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Stanmore?
Long gravel or block-paved driveways with gates and often a turning circle, so vehicles get very close, but the internal carry from the front door to the rear kitchen can be 15m or more with a hallway turn. Carrying through the house means protecting the whole route first: floor boarded, banister padded, and the front door held open on a wedge rather than by hand. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. That is what the morning is planned around.
Is worktop installation common in Stanmore?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Small kitchens in a shared house are all short runs and tight cut-out spacing, which is more bench work per square metre than one large kitchen would be. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. The prep list is not optional. Batching several kitchens together is the one situation where buying a whole slab is cheaper per kitchen rather than more expensive. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly.
Why do two Stanmore kitchens the same size price differently?
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Eased in, never forced. Unlock and clear the side gate and back door, and move bins, planters and washing lines out of the alley run. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
