Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Grooves and an undermounted bowl are usually specified together, since the grooves are run to the bowl edge. Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. A side passage and a back door mean the stone rarely has to come through the house, which changes the job more than most people expect. None of it changes the material, but it does decide whether the top comes out of offcut stock or wants a slab bought for it alone. Small enough to carry, awkward enough to plan.

The alternative to a join is a shorter run, which is usually the wrong thing to trade away. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. Hoisting through a window is occasionally the answer, and it is a decision made at the template, not improvised on the fitting day. Where the hall runs straight through to the back the piece can be walked in flat, and it is only the two door frames that have to be cleared. What the route really decides for a bathroom is the shelving and the window board, since long thin pieces are the ones that break when they are twisted round a turn. The bath is usually in the way before the doorway is.
