Stone bar tops in Edgware

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Edgware kitchens

The buildings and streets around Edgware

1930s semi1930s detachedpurpose-built 1960s flattown centre redevelopment blocks

Whatever you have read about stone bar top work in Edgware, the only version that matters is the one measured against the kitchen you are standing in. Large interwar semis and detached houses with deep plots, where full-width rear extensions with an island and a separate utility are the standard specification, and kosher kitchen requirements are common enough that duplicated sinks and hobs should be assumed rather than asked about late. Town centre flats are the opposite: fixed compact galleys with no scope to change. Ask for the design and quotation visit. It is free, it carries no obligation, and it settles all of this properly.

Where the side return has been filled in, one side of the new room is old brick and the other is new blockwork, and the two do not behave alike. None of that stops a bar being fitted level, but it does mean the top is set to a datum of its own and packed off the frame rather than followed down to the floor. The stone follows the frame, and the frame follows the stools.

Houses at the later end of this period went up in cavity rather than solid brick, so two that look identical from the road behave differently when a fixing goes in. A bar here usually appears at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, where it is read from both sides and both sides have to be finished to the same standard. Piece length is capped by the way in and the support follows.

The kinds of building we work in here are 1930s semi, 1930s detached, purpose-built 1960s flat and town centre redevelopment blocks. The template reads them differently even where the layout looks identical.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Edgware is its own job

We would rather tell you what a fit in Edgware is going to involve now than discover it with a slab in the hallway. Wide 1930s roads with driveways and clear side access on most houses, though a lot of side alleys have been filled by side extensions. Around the station and the shopping centre, loading is restricted and multi-storey height barriers rule out taller vans. Two sinks and two hobs in one run leaves very little solid material between cut-outs, so the piece needs rodding or a repositioned joint to survive transport. You see the drawing before we cut, and if we have read the room wrong, that is the moment to say so, not the morning the fitters arrive.

The work

What bar tops involves

Material choice is part of it: quartz for most indoor bars, porcelain or sintered stone where citrus, wine and strong cleaning products land on the surface every day. Cut-outs for a bar sink, a drip tray or a socket through the surface are machined before anything leaves the workshop, so nothing is cut into a finished counter in the room. You are left with every visible face finished to one standard, the underside of the front edge included, which is the face a seated person looks straight at.

A bar is drawn outward from the seat, because where somebody sits fixes the height, the knee room and how far the front edge has to reach. Where the counter has two levels the spine between them is built first, and the two tops are drawn as a pair so the front edges stay parallel down the length. A side passage usually lets a full length reach the room, so the piece is sized by the slab and by what the frame will carry rather than by the door. One visit, and the bar is usable that evening.

The money

What it costs in Edgware

Two counters of the same length price very differently depending on how far the front edge reaches, because past a certain point the carcass stops carrying it and steel starts. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. Material is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, with the batch and the slab size sitting behind that variation, and the workshop time quoted apart from it. Nothing about the support is folded into the stone rate.

1930s and inter-war semis

Edgware in the housing figures

Taken across Edgware and the roads either side of it, most of the stock dates from the building boom of the twenties and thirties. Where the frame is site-built rather than a kitchen carcass, its plumb and its fixings are checked before the top is measured. Levelling happens in the frame, not under the slab.

1930s and inter-war semis

The carry, and what it rules out

A gate post set narrower than the opening looks generous from the road and stops a wide piece a metre in. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. Where the bay is timed, the support goes in first.

1930s and inter-war semis

What Edgware asks for

A trade counter or a bar does not come out of the local housing stock, so there is no ranking to give you. The housing itself asks for worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop fabrication. The work is quoted the same way regardless.

Access

Getting stone into an Edgware kitchen

Wide 1930s roads with driveways and clear side access on most houses, though a lot of side alleys have been filled by side extensions. Around the station and the shopping centre, loading is restricted and multi-storey height barriers rule out taller vans.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Edgware

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Are you set up to work in Edgware, or is it a subcontractor?

Yes. Edgware is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA8. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Barnet. Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The stone comes off last because it goes down last. Nothing needs visiting and nothing needs collecting: the template is in your kitchen and so is the fit.

Why would bar tops in Edgware be any different from anywhere else?

There is a chimney breast on each flank wall, and the one in the kitchen carried a boiler flue rather than a fireplace, so the recess beside it is shallow. These bars nearly always land at the open end of a knocked-through kitchen and dining room, which means the piece is read from both sides and both sides get the same edge treatment rather than one being left as a cut face. A garage floor slopes and the frame takes that up. A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. A bar top will not correct a frame that is out of true.

What is the carry like in Edgware?

A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Two people to a bar top, four where the nose is deep. On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. A short unload is still a long fit on a bar.

Does Edgware actually ask for bar tops?

Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop fabrication. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. A late bar is a separate visit and the quote says so. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Nothing is assumed about a frame somebody else built.

Where does the money go on an Edgware worktop?

A tall bank of housings at one end takes a chunk out of the working run, so the usable length of that side is always less than the length of the wall behind it. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A radius on a walked-past corner is agreed at drawing stage. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Edgware?

Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. Fixings go into timber that was put there for them. Confirm the finished height you want and whether the bar is seen from both sides, and tell us who is building the frame and when it will be complete. Someone who expects to still be there in ten years asks different questions: how a honed finish marks, what a sealer does and does not do, and whether a chip by the sink can be repaired in place. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. The corbel is on show, so it is chosen rather than supplied.

How many visits does an Edgware worktop take?

The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. A template on a normal kitchen takes two to three hours in the room. The template is taken in your kitchen after the units are in and fixed, never before. The boiler has usually been moved into the kitchen at some point, with its flue through the outer leaf and its pipework surface run to the nearest corner. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. Where the weight lands is worked out before the piece is cut.

Do you take the old worktop away?

An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. The carcasses stay. Only the surface changes. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. The distance from the standing to the actual kitchen door is the number that counts, since plenty of drives finish at a side gate and a garden path. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. Permits are sorted before a corbel is drilled.

What happens when the route into an Edgware kitchen is tighter than the worktop?

The lift, if there is one, is measured on the diagonal, because that is the dimension a long piece actually uses. Every piece goes in by hand and stone does not bend, so the tightest turn on the route sets the longest piece. Doorways, the newel post and the handrail usually take the room away, rather than the stairs themselves. The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. A trade bar is carried in outside trading hours or not at all.

Can an Edgware worktop be done in one piece?

A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. Join count is a question about slab size and run length, nothing else. A full-depth tall unit projects past the worktop line, and the run has to be scribed against its side panel instead of carrying on past it. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. One level or two, and it is decided early.

We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.
