Hampton Hill kitchens

The buildings and streets around Hampton Hill

Victorian terraceVictorian villa1930s semimodern flats over shops

A survey is where reception counter work in Hampton Hill stops being a guess, because until someone has stood in the kitchen nobody knows what it is going to ask for. A high street of Victorian shops and cottages with tight first-floor flats, and behind it Victorian terraces and interwar semis where the kitchen is a rear room of roughly 2.6m by 3.5m, generally refitted in place with an L of 3m and 1.8m. If you are not sure which of those describes your kitchen, that is normal, and it is exactly what the template visit settles.

Small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run: short lengths, few joins, and a lot to work around. The lower transaction shelf sits at the height a person in a wheelchair can be served at, and that height is fixed on the drawing before anything else about the desk is. Front of house is read from standing height and from seated height both.

These flats have been reconfigured more than once, so the kitchen often sits in what was a bedroom with services run a long way to reach it. The units on these parades are shallow, so the counter takes most of the floor and every millimetre of the knee recess is argued over. The knee recess is argued over hardest where the floor is shallowest.

The houses and blocks behind these jobs are Victorian terrace, Victorian villa, 1930s semi and modern flats over shops. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Hampton Hill is its own job

There is nothing clever about a fit in Hampton Hill going smoothly, only a survey that asked the right things beforehand. High Street loading is timed and the parade is busy, so flats above shops mean a street door, a straight steep stair and a right-angle turn at the top; the residential roads behind have driveways and are far easier. Flats above the shops have a stair with a tight top landing, so anything over 2.4m has to be jointed - measure the landing, not just the stair width. Three to seven working days sit between the template and the fit, and everything difficult gets solved in that gap.

The work

What reception counters involves

Support for any overhang at the public face belongs to the drawing, whether that turns out to be a steel flat, a plywood deck or a gable the joiner adds for us. The route from the door to where the counter will stand is boarded and the finished floor covered before the first piece comes off the trolley. You end up with the building open the next morning, because the work was sequenced around the hours it was allowed rather than around a normal working day.

The apertures, for cable, for a card reader, for a screen stem, are machined at the works and cannot be added afterwards. Where a run is longer than one piece can be, the join is placed over a support and away from the line the eye travels along. A back door off a service road often takes a longer piece than the shopfront will, and that is what decides the join count. Templated to the carcass, not to the elevation.

The money

What it costs in Hampton Hill

What the joiner builds moves the figure as much as what we cut, because a carcass arriving square and level takes hours off the fitting day. One continuous L takes more slab than its metreage implies, because the waste sits inside the angle. The rate is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, though what you buy is slabs rather than square metres, which is why the material line follows the yield and not the tape. Every aperture is counted before a figure is given.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

What Hampton Hill asks for

Commercial rather than residential, and priced from the drawing rather than from the housing type. Residentially, worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating is what comes up here. The fabrication is identical.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Hampton Hill in the housing figures

Locally very little is recent build, so nearly every job is a replacement into units that are already there. A fit-out programme leaves the counter until last, which is when the least time remains to template it. The knee recess appears on the drawing in millimetres.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The carry, and what it rules out

A window sill or a radiator on the half-landing takes the corner out of the turn at precisely the point the piece needs that corner. Where the way in caps the length, the join is put over a support in the carcass rather than wherever the piece happened to run out. Trestles go up in the lobby before anything is unwrapped.

Access

Getting stone into a Hampton Hill kitchen

High Street loading is timed and the parade is busy, so flats above shops mean a street door, a straight steep stair and a right-angle turn at the top; the residential roads behind have driveways and are far easier.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Hampton Hill

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Hampton Hill far enough out to be a problem for you?

Yes. Hampton Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are TW12. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames. Deep gravel takes the wheels of a loaded trolley and holds them, so either boards go down or the pieces are carried. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. Nothing is stood anywhere on a pavement it could be knocked from. Both visits happen in your kitchen, the template and the fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What do the kitchens in Hampton Hill do to reception counters?

The front rooms sit over the shop window with a structural beam beneath them, and the floor either side of that beam is not at one level. The parades behind terraces of this period carry pharmacies, minicab offices, takeaways and small surgeries, and their counters are the hardest-used stone we fit. Protected finishes decide the fixings before the drawing is finished. The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Where the plaster bows, the counter is drawn away from it.

Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Hampton Hill kitchens?

Carrying down a flight is not the easier direction, because the weight runs ahead of the crew and whoever is at the bottom has no way of stopping a slip. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The transaction shelf goes almost anywhere the upper top will not. Block paving bedded on sand can rut under a fully loaded van, and that is said to the customer beforehand rather than explained afterwards. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. A height barrier rules out the tail lift before it rules out anything else.

Is Hampton Hill really a reception counters area?

Not particularly. It would be easy to say yes and leave it there. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is about what people have here rather than how it gets done. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A phased fit-out gets phased templating, one lobby at a time. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. What the operator needs at the shelf outranks the elevation.

What decides the price of a worktop in Hampton Hill?

A mitred corner is cut and dressed as a matched pair, and if either leg shifts by a millimetre on site the joint opens along its whole length rather than at one end. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. A curved front is a waterjet job and a carcass problem both. Expect £110 to £550 per square metre for material supply only, with templating, fabrication and fitting on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

A room can be out of square in both directions at once, so the wall that leans is also the wall that runs downhill, and one scribe cannot answer both. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. A shadow gap solves what a scribe cannot. Tell us whether there is rear access off a service road, and send the carcass dimensions with the till, terminal and cable positions marked on them. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. The knee recess is not negotiable, whoever is signing.

What is actually on a Hampton Hill worktop quote?

Every run, cut-out, edge, join and groove set is a line, which is what makes it comparable with anyone else’s. Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Plaster thickness varies over the height of a wall, so the line at worktop height is not the line at skirting level, and the units decide which one matters. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. The knee recess is checked for square before the shelf is cut.

How much upkeep is a stone worktop?

A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. Topping a seal up is a wipe-on job with a cloth. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Rear access over a flat roof or up an external stair exists in some of these, and it is worth checking before the front stair is assumed. A pharmacy counter is two heights before anyone draws it, with a consultation position at the low level and a dispensing side that never meets the public, and the apertures for a card reader and a till sit at the transaction shelf. A desk seen from a whole floor is finished on every edge.

Will I be able to see the joins?

Join count and position are settled from the template drawing rather than improvised on the fitting day. Join count is a question about slab size and run length, nothing else. A join sits over a cabinet gable. It never spans a gap and never runs through a cut-out. Butt-jointing over the gable puts the seam a few hundred millimetres back from the corner, below the eye line instead of straight across it. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. External corners on a counter are mitred, never butted.

Is a full-height splashback practical in a Hampton Hill kitchen?

Tiling and stone can meet, but where they meet is decided before the template rather than after. An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. It is quoted by area like the worktop, so a long run is a material line rather than a trim. A flat over a shop is reached by a separate street door and a straight steep stair, and that stair is the whole access question. Terraces from this period sit behind small parades, and the counters there belong to pharmacies, minicab offices and takeaways rather than to lobbies. Clinic counters carry a card reader and a screen at the low level.
