Lampton kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s semiEdwardian terracepostwar infill

A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. A single day, planned properly.

1930s semis where the kitchen has been pushed out into a rear conservatory or a full-width extension. Family cooking, so double ovens, a long prep run against the back wall and often a peninsula rather than a full island.

Edwardian terraces are wider and taller than the Victorian houses next to them, so the kitchen usually takes a full-width rear room rather than a narrow outrigger. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Units kept, surface changed, one day.

The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s semi, Edwardian terrace and postwar infill. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run

The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes.

Getting stone into the room

Lampton Road is a busy through route with controlled parking either side of it. Most houses have a drive, but it is usually already holding two cars.

The building, and what it does to the job

Conservatory-style rear extensions here have low cill heights, so check the window board clash before you set an upstand height you cannot achieve.

Floors and walls that have settled towards the back addition, so the existing run is out of level and the stone will show it the moment it is set and levelled properly.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop installation. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Getting stone into a Lampton kitchen

Lampton Road is a busy through route with controlled parking either side of it. Most houses have a drive, but it is usually already holding two cars.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Lampton

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Lampton, or just list it?

Yes. Lampton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are TW3. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hounslow. Without a bay the van ends up on a single yellow with a crew member watching it, which takes a pair of hands off the carry. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop replacement in Lampton?

Edwardian terraces are wider and taller than the Victorian houses next to them, so the kitchen usually takes a full-width rear room rather than a narrow outrigger. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Sound carcasses are the one condition. Conservatory-style rear extensions here have low cill heights, so check the window board clash before you set an upstand height you cannot achieve.

Is access a problem in Lampton?

Lampton Road is a busy through route with controlled parking either side of it. Most houses have a drive, but it is usually already holding two cars. A narrow entrance hall with a turn into the back of the house caps the longest piece we can physically get in, whatever the run itself measures. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The strip-out is planned around it.

Do you do much worktop replacement around Lampton?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. Sound carcasses or it does not go ahead. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.

What decides the price of a worktop in Lampton?

The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. We would rather find it at template than on the morning, which is why the templater looks behind the units. The laminate has been covering it up. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Sound carcasses are the condition.
