London Bridge kitchens

The buildings and streets around London Bridge

The reason stone table top work in London Bridge is quoted per kitchen rather than per metre comes down to the range of rooms these worktops end up in. Flats above and behind commercial floors, so kitchens are compact and services-led - a straight 2.4m to 3m run with the extract ducted into an existing riser, and little scope to move the sink or hob because of where the stacks fall. You can leave that to us. What we need from you is a rough idea of the size and a date that suits.

Services coming up through a floor slab mean the island cannot move to suit the stone, so the stone is cut to suit the island. Cleaning chemicals settle more of this specification than colour does, because a sanitiser sprayed twenty times a day will find any material that cannot take it. Twenty tops that match, not twenty that nearly do.

Services run on the surface in these buildings, so conduit and pipework cross the wall behind the units and stand proud of it. The units here are large and open, which is where the long communal table appears, and a long top is a two-piece decision rather than a one-piece one. A rear yard is worth an hour of the day.

On these streets the housing is Victorian warehouse conversion, 2000s apartment block and 2010s tower. Each of those puts the services somewhere else, and the cut-outs follow.

True everywhere

Restaurant and cafe table tops, in short

  • Every edge is profiled and polished, because every edge is visible and touchable.
  • Dekton and sintered surfaces are stable in heat and sunlight, so they work outdoors as well as in.
  • Several tops come off one slab, so a set of them matches rather than nearly matching.
  • Up to four quartz samples are posted free before anything is cut.

The place

Why London Bridge is its own job

We have carried enough stone into kitchens in London Bridge to know what to allow for before the day arrives. One of the worst areas in the borough for kerbside - a 24-hour bus and taxi environment, timed loading only, and buildings that insist on out-of-hours deliveries through a goods entrance away from the main lobby. Book the loading window and template with the appliances in place, because there is no coming back for a second look here without another permit. Every one of those is a question we ask on the design visit, long before anybody talks about a deposit.

The work

What restaurant table tops involves

Square, rectangular, round and oval tops are all cut here, the curved ones on the CNC from a drawing rather than dressed by hand off a scribed line. Sizes come off your seating plan and the gangways you have to keep, so the table dimensions are agreed before any slab is committed to the order. You end up with a written record of the batch, so an extra six tops next year are ordered against a reference rather than against somebody’s memory.

Every top in an order is drawn, cut and drilled to the base it will stand on, and the bases in a room are rarely all the same pattern. Fixing holes are drilled blind from the underside to a stopped depth, so nothing breaks through onto the face. A communal table longer than a slab is either two pieces meeting over a central leg or a single piece in a material that comes longer. One slab run, so the room matches itself.

The money

What it costs in London Bridge

Drilling and the fixing kit are priced per piece as well, since every base plate has its own bolt pattern and its own depth. In a galley the runs are short and the cut-outs are close together, so the fixed operations carry more of the total than the stone does. Nothing about the £110 to £550 supply range changes once the template is done. What the template settles is the piece count and the operations, and that is where the figure firms up. A spare now costs less than a match later.

warehouse and wharf conversions

London Bridge in the housing figures

Across London Bridge, most homes are rented rather than owned. Taking a unit for a season argues for something that packs away, which is a thinner section and a foot that folds flat. Weight is discussed openly, because somebody lifts it.

warehouse and wharf conversions

What London Bridge asks for

This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop installation and worktop replacement. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.

warehouse and wharf conversions

The building, and what it does to the job

A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. Where a floor falls away, the levelling is done by winding out the feet under each base rather than by packing anything under the stone. Banquette seating wants a cantilever foot under it.

Access

Getting stone into a London Bridge kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in London Bridge

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

01

Do you cover London Bridge?

Yes. London Bridge is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE1. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Southwark. Time-limited bays are camera-enforced across a lot of managed estates, so the unload runs to the clock and the van moves off afterwards. A table order comes off the van as a stack of frames and a pallet of bases, and both of those need somewhere to stand before either is moved. A clock on the kerb changes the order of unloading. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

02

What is different about restaurant table tops in London Bridge?

Many of these kitchens are a fitted pod dropped into open floor, so three sides are free and only the fourth is ever scribed. These units are large and open, which is where the long communal table shows up, and a piece longer than a slab is a decision rather than a detail: either two tops meeting over a central leg, or a single piece in a material that comes in a longer sheet. A high ceiling wants a thicker edge under it. Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. None of that is scribed against on a table, since it stands clear of every wall, so the awkwardness moves from the back edge to the floor and the base. A rocking table is a floor problem and not a stone one.

03

Is access a problem in London Bridge?

Suction lifters need a clean dry face to hold, so in the wet the pads come off and the piece goes back to being carried on webbing by hand. A table order is many small pieces rather than one long one, so the route decides how many trips the delivery takes rather than how big anything can be. Polished faces never travel touching each other. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. The bases are the heavy half of the delivery, so the pallet is dealt with first while there are still hands free for it. Counted off at the tail lift where the standing is short.

04

Does London Bridge actually ask for restaurant table tops?

Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation and worktop replacement. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. Several units in one building are fitted out to the same drawing, so an error on that drawing is an error repeated in every flat. Table work arrives as a batch by its nature, and a batch means one slab run rather than the same colour ordered twice a year apart. Held stock is worth more than a discount. A converted flat is measured off the original house, so no two units in the same building have quite the same kitchen run. A room opening in a second phase is worth naming now, while the material is still on the ground and a match is a telephone call. What one room learns, the next room uses.

05

What makes one London Bridge kitchen dearer than the next?

The two runs are read against each other rather than against the floor, so they are set to one datum taken across the aisle instead of measured up from the boards. A table top answers to none of that, since it meets no wall and needs no scribe, but the pieces come off the same slab as the counter and the colour has to carry across both. The seating plan is priced as a list of pieces. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

06

What holds a template up more often than anything else?

A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. A column, a boxed duct or a fixed bench in a dining room is designed around with a shape cut to suit rather than notched on site. The gangway is a measurement rather than an impression. Give us the communal table length and the base positions along it, and confirm the goods lift dimensions so the frames can be sized to the car. Quartz is the sensible default in a rental: nothing to seal, nothing to maintain, and nothing an incoming tenant needs briefing on. A table top bolted to a base you already own is loose furniture rather than a fixture, so it leaves with the operator at the end of a term. Bolted to your own bases, so they leave when you do.

07

How many joins will a London Bridge kitchen need?

Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. A finished join is typically two to three millimetres, colour-matched and sanded flush. Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join whatever the room looks like. A galley that is also the route to the back door is a corridor first and a kitchen second, and what the shape can take is set by the traffic going through it. Rounds waste the corners of their blank where squares do not, so the mix of shapes moves the slab count more than the number of covers does. Sizes settle the yield before the shape does.

08

Is the quote a fixed price or an estimate?

Taking the old tops away is a line rather than an assumption, so it comes off if you do not want it. Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. Where the boxing stands proud of the finished wall the upstand behind it has to be broken into separate lengths, because one piece cannot pass it. Fixed seating sets the dimension it faces, so a piece against a bench is drawn to the bench instead of to a standard size. Fixed seating fixes the dimension it faces.

09

What if the stone gets chipped on the way into a London Bridge kitchen?

Door frames and the stair route are protected too, since most contact happens on the way in. A remade piece is cut from the same slab run wherever the slab allows, because a replacement from another batch will not match across a join. A piece is never laid flat across a gap while it is moved, because that is how stone cracks unaided. A loading bay or a red route puts a clock on the unload, so the pieces come off in the order they will be fitted rather than the order they were loaded. Tops travel upright in a padded frame, and it is the frame rather than the person carrying it that has to clear the tightest turn. The frame needs the clearance the piece does.

10

Is a full-height stone splashback worth doing?

Stone up a wall is heavier than tile and bonded rather than hung, so the wall has to be sound. Upstand or splashback, the stone is cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time, so the batch actually matches. A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. Original brickwork is uneven by ten millimetres or more across a bay, so the back edge is scribed to the actual face rather than to a line. The delivery is straightforward by comparison, since a goods lift and a loading door will take a full frame and a whole floor can be staged in one movement. Long hours push the choice towards a harder face.

“We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.”
