Monument kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Old plaster built up over decades makes the scribing heavy, and that time has to be in the plan rather than found on the day. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. One visit, our own installers.
The flats here are small city apartments in converted upper floors, and kitchens are typically an L of 2.4-3m with a compact appliance run, often opening straight into the living space.
The gradient on the lanes down to the river means a loaded trolley will run away from you - chock it or carry it, do not push it downhill. Because the buildings are narrow and deep, the kitchen usually has no window and sits against an internal wall, so a stone splashback and a matching windowsill-height upstand is the standard finish. The lanes running down toward the river between Eastcheap and Lower Thames Street are narrow, one-way and steeply graded in places, and several are pedestrian-only during the working day.
The lift is a small passenger car with a gate, and the alternative is a stone stair winding round the shaft with a turn at every half-landing. The porter has to be booked, the goods lift protected with the block's own blankets or our own boards, and communal carpet and stair runners covered from the entrance to the flat door before a single piece moves. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.
What we are usually templating in is upper-floor flat in a Victorian commercial building, modern apartment over retail, narrow lane building conversion and postwar block with residential floors. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our the City run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run
An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat.

What gets asked for here
Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop templating come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Getting stone into the room
Building entrances are often a single street door with a straight stair to the upper floors, no lift, and no room at all to set a slab down while you rest.

The lanes running down toward the river between Eastcheap and Lower Thames Street are narrow, one-way and steeply graded in places, and several are pedestrian-only during the working day. Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Monument
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Monument?
Yes. Monument is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EC3R. It is worked on our the City run, along with the rest of the Square Mile. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Monument change how worktop installation works?
These kitchens are full of boxed soil stacks, gas risers and heating pipework, and the boxing usually stops short of the ceiling. This is the most managed day we do. That is the shape of the day. The gradient on the lanes down to the river means a loaded trolley will run away from you - chock it or carry it, do not push it downhill.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Monument?
The lanes running down toward the river between Eastcheap and Lower Thames Street are narrow, one-way and steeply graded in places, and several are pedestrian-only during the working day. Building entrances are often a single street door with a straight stair to the upper floors, no lift, and no room at all to set a slab down while you rest. Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. None of it is worked out on the doorstep.
Is Monument really a worktop installation area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One visit, done properly. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.
Why do two Monument kitchens the same size price differently?
Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Have the works booking confirmed with the managing agent or porter in advance, with the lift slot and any parking permit or bay suspension in place. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
